Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Ice Hockey season ends in overtime loss to Holy Cross

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - The American International College ice hockey team was upended 4-3 in overtime by the College of the Holy Cross in the deciding third game of the Atlantic Hockey Association Tournament Quarterfinal on Sunday, March 5.

AIC ends the season at 18-14-7.

Holy Cross opened the scoring as Liam McLinskey fired home a shot at 4:34, but the Yellow Jackets countered less than two minutes later as Jordan Biro pushed the puck back to the point for Matt Rickard. Rickard's one-timer was tipped in by Brett Rylance for ninth of the year at 6:28.

The Crusaders drew the game's first power play late in the period and converted it to go ahead 2-1, with a Devin Phillips shot hitting the target at 15:02.

In the second, Holy Cross nearly took a 3-1 lead, but Rickard and Casey McDonald blocked an open side of the net and Nicholas Cardelli flung the loose puck up the left side of the ice to Julius Janhonen for a two-on-one. Janhonen's feed to Blake Bennett set up the senior for his 21st of the season, tying the game at 3:25.

The Crusaders once again retook the lead on a power play, as Tyler Ghirardosi struck at 12:13, redirecting a Matt Guerra point shot in front.

However, AIC was able to tie the game again. On a two-man advantage, AIC won the draw and passed around the zone, with Brian Kramer dishing to Bennett, who got back a give-and-go from Biro to wrist home his 22nd of the season at 17:00. That goal tied the record set by Austin Orszulak '17 for the most in a single season in the Division I era, with the former captain netting 22 in 2014-15.

The third period went by without a goal, although not without chances. AIC had to kill a lengthy 5-on-3 and did so, and time ran out on regulation without a victor.

The Yellow Jackets also had to kill a penalty in overtime, and succeeded there as well. Unfortunately, the Crusaders ultimately scored anyway, with McLinskey puttng back a rebound at 18:46 to end the game and series.

Fiske ended with 48 saves in the game and 118 in the series.
