FAST FACTS:
Final Scores: Penn State University 19, AIC 7; Central Washington University 24, AIC 5; Harvard 24, AIC 10
Location: Fifth Third Stadium, Kennesaw, Georgia
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- AIC opened with a strong drive against Penn State University, pushing near to the try line before ultimately turning the ball over. That turned the fortunes of the game for the Nittany Lions, who scored twice with one successful conversion before Jessica Berggren was able to beat the defense and plant the ball behind the try line to bring AIC within a 12-5 margin. Kassidy Pothier landed the conversion as well to further close the gap. However, the Penn State side scored the only points of the second half, earning the 19-7 opening round win.
- The Yellow Jackets had a tough opening stanza against Central Washington University, falling behind 17-0 before the break. Ne'a Moffett put home a second-half try to get AIC on the board, but the Wildcats earned the win, 24-5.
- Harvard University struck quickly, and likewise built a 17-0 lead heading into the break. The Yellow Jackets did not cave, however, and a great run by Suley Guerrero for a try was followed by Pothier intercepting a pass deep along the right sideline and touching down a try to cut the deficit to 17-10 with three minutes to play. The Crimson rebounded, scoring shortly after to put the game out of reach and win 24-10.
