HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After both teams went down 1-2-3 in the first, junior catcher Victoria Andrade became the first baserunner with a one-out walk in the second. However, the Yellow Jackets could not get her past first base.
- Owls pitcher Jessica Perucki registered the first hit of the game with one out in the home half of the frame, and the Owls put two on with two outs, but freshman pitcher Isabella Erti induced a groundout to third to shut down the threat.
- Angela Barresi led off the bottom of the third with a single for the home team, and the Owls added another single to get first and second with one out, leading AIC to change to sophomore Alexis Jimenez in the circle. Though Jimenez was able to induce the second out, catcher Jacqueline Dumont's single to center drove Barresi in to give the Owls a 1-0 lead through three.
- Jimenez helped her own cause by leading off the fourth with a line-shot single through the left side of the infield, but the Owls were able to stop AIC from there.
- SCSU doubled its lead in the fourth with a leadoff home run to left by Jayden Delaporta. The home side subsequently put a runner on second but could not bring her home.
- With two down in the fifth, sophomore second baseman Mackenzie Berman was able to bunt for a hit, though she advanced no further. Southern Connecticut had much the same in the bottom half, leaving a pair.
- In the sixth, senior shortstop Jalia Santos led off with a single into right center and was sacrificed over by Jimenez. Senior pinch hitter Makaylah Mutz drove a single through the left side to put baserunners on the corners. AIC then scored as senior designated player Brianna Rivera reached on an error, bringing Santos home and setting up second and third with one out. Andrade hit a bouncer to short, and sophomore pinch runner Lillian Acampora came home, beating the throw and tying the game.
- Berman led off the seventh by stinging a single to right field, and two batters later, Santos walked on four pitches to give the Yellow Jackets two on. However, AIC stranded the duo there. Fortunately, freshman pitcher Riley Sullivan sat down the Owls in order to force extras thanks in part to a great catch in center field by rookie Abigail Wells.
- In the eighth, Andrade and senior first baseman Kacie Allison worked back-to-back one out walks, and senior right fielder Olivia Ortega loaded the bases with a single to left. Berman hit a soft grounder to short, allowing Andrade to score the go-ahead run.
- Dumont reached to start the bottom half of the inning via hit-by-pitch, but Perucki popped out trying to bunt her over. Gora then stole extra bases from Delaporta with a diving snare of a line drive, nearly doubling Dumont off. Sullivan then got ahead of Emily Lange, who was able tobattle backin the count to get it full, but ultimately bouncedout to Allison, ending the game in AIC's favor, 3-2.
A LONG TIME COMING:
- AIC's last playoff game was over a decade prior, in the 2010 Northeast-10 Championship, also against the Owls.
- The Owls took that game 12-0 in five innings following an incredible run by AIC that included a win over nationally ranked New Haven and a nine-inning thriller with Adelphi.
- The victory marks the first postseason win for a softball coach at AIC other than the legendary Judy Groff, as current head coach Shalise Tolentino earned her first postseason win in her third year behind the bench.
NEXT UP:
- AIC advances to the Northeast-10 Southwest Division Semifinal, a one-game set against the University of New Haven on Thursday, May 6 at 3:00 p.m.
