JAN PHYL VILLAGE, Florida The American International College softball team came out on the wrong side of a pair of games with Slippery Rock University and Glenville State College, falling 7-1 and 5-3 on Sunday, March 8.
FAST FACTS:
Scores: Slippery Rock 7, AIC 1; Glenville State 5, AIC 3
Records: AIC falls to 2-2 on the season
Location: Jan Phyl Village, Florida
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Game One vs. Slippery Rock:
- Most of the offense in the game happened in the bottom of the second, as the Rock complied three consecutive one-out singles to take a 1-0 lead.
- After a flyout, another single and a error combined to bring in a second Slippery Rock run, which was followed by a bunt single to give the Rock a 3-0 edge.
- On the next play, a pair of errors brought in another run, before a subsequent single made the game 6-0. AIC finally escaped the frame with a groundout.
- AIC started off strong in the third as freshmen Alexis Jiminez and Mackenzie Aleva reached with no outs, but the Yellow Jackets could not bring them in. A leadoff double, passed ball, and sacrifice fly in the bottom half further extended Slippery Rock's lead as well.
- In the fourth, AIC did break through, as graduate Kayla Riley and junior Brianna Rivera hit back-to-back singles; two batters later, a walk loaded the bases for Aleva, who singled to score Rivera, but AIC did not score any further runs in the 7-1 setback.
Game Two vs. Glenville State:
- Glenville State opened with back-to-back singles and then executed a double steal to snag home and take a 1-0 lead; two batters later, the Pioneers had first and third again and were able to swipe home, although this time AIC did get the runner at second.
- AIC came roaring back in the third as freshman Mackenzie Berman singled to start things off; three batters later, senior Bonnie Kennedy slugged a triple to left to bring the run home, and scored on an error at third in AIC's next plate appearance.
- In the fifth, the Pioneers rebuilt their lead with small ball, as a single, sacrifice bunt, and groundout were followed by three consecutive base hits to bring in two runs.
- Glenville State added a run in the seventh without the benefit of a hit, thanks to a walk, two hit batters, and a sacrifice fly that made the score 5-2.
- In the last half inning, Rivera walked to start things off, and was replaced on the basepaths by rookie Lillian Acampora. She was able to scamper to second on a groundout, and then scored on an error in the next at-bat, which put the winning run at the dish. However, the Pioneers induced a double play to end the game.
