Women's rugby completes pool play at USA Rugby Collegiate 7s Nationals

TUCSON, Arizona The American International College women's rugby team went 0-3 in pool play at the USA Rugby Collegiate 7s Championship on Saturday, May 25.

RESULTS:
Pool Play:
Game One: Lindenwood 36, AIC 0
Game Two: Dartmouth 28, AIC 7
Game Three: Penn State 28, AIC 17

STATS LEADERS:
Elizabeth Harvey: One try, one conversion
Kassidy Pothier: One try, one conversion
Alyssa Demetrius: One try

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • AIC opened play against Lindenwood, and the Lions surged out to an early lead with a first-minute try and conversion. They added two more tries and another conversion to lead 19-0 at the break.
  • Out of halftime, Lindenwood added three more tries and one conversion for a 36-0 win.
  • In the second game, the Yellow Jackets took on Dartmouth. The Big Green scored the game's first three tries and converted successfully on all of them to lead 21-0 six minutes in before senior Elizabeth Harvey broke through the line of defenders to put down AIC's first points of the day. She hit the conversion attempt following the try to make the score 21-7 at the break.
  • Dartmouth notched the only points of the second half with a try and conversion in the 11th minute for a 28-7 win.
  • In the third game, AIC faced off with Penn State, and though the Nittany Lions struck first to take a 7-0 lead, AIC tied the game on a hard-fought try from senior Melissa Dessources, and rookie Kassidy Pothier converted to tie the game at 7-7. However, Penn State struck twice more before the break to lead 21-7.
  • In the second half, AIC closed the gap significantly, as freshman Alyssa Demetrius touched the ball down in the try zone and Pothier scored one as well to make the contest a one-possession affair at 21-17 with just under two minutes to play. The Nittany Lions held on, adding a try at the very end to win 28-17.

NEXT UP:
  • AIC will play twice more on the final day of the tournament, and opens with the Bowl Semifinal against the third-place team from Pool B, Davenport, at 12:20 p.m. Eastern. The winner of that game will play in the Bowl Final against the winner of the other semifinal for fifth place at 3:00 p.m. Eastern, while the two losing teams will face off at 2:40 p.m. Eastern in the Shield Final.
