Guyon joins 1,000 point club in win over Southern Connecticut

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut - Senior forward Alyssa Guyon joined the 1,000 point club as the American International College women's basketball team defeated Southern Connecticut 78-65 in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup on Wednesday, February 13.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Owls scored first, but Guyon responded with five straight points. Senior forward Dana Watts added to the run with a layup, putting AIC up 7-2 on Southern Connecticut. The Owls closed out the quarter on an 18-5 run and leading AIC 20-12.
  • SCSU starting the second quarter with five points, giving the Owls their largest lead of the game at 25-12. AIC began to chip away at the deficit, thanks to 10 points in the second quarter from Watts and a layup at the buzzer from Guyon. At the break, the Yellow Jackets found themselves trailing 33-29.
  • AIC opened the second half on a 17-3 run, capped off by a jumper from Guyon to join the 1,000 point club. The Yellow Jackets led the Owls by 10 after the Guyon basket. At the end of the third, AIC led SCSU, 52-43.
  • Guyon knocked down a three-pointer to start the final quarter to grow the AIC lead back up to double digits. Halfway through the fourth, the Yellow Jackets led 63-50 over the Owls.
  • With 1:56 remaining in the fourth, SCSU cut the deficit to 10 points, but never reached single digits as AIC made baskets and free throws down the stretch and defeated the Owls 78-65.

BUZZWORTHY:

  • Guyon became the 22nd player in AIC women's basketball history to score 1,000 career points. Her 27 in the game was also a career best.
  • Freshman guard Zoe Willis scored a career-high 13 points.
  • Watts scored a season-high 31 points.

MILESTONE WATCH:

  • Watts is second in career points with 2,098 points, behind only Juana Garcia with 2,189 points.
  • Watts is also behind only Garcia in rebounds. Watts is currently at 1,120 career rebounds, while Garcia sits on the top with 1,223.
  • Watts passed Garcia for the program's record for defensive rebounds with 744 defensive boards for her career.
  • Watts is currently third in AIC history for field goals made with 711, sitting behind Sharmion Selman (827) and Garcia (894).
  • Watts is in sole possession of the free throws made record with 581 in 110 games. Head coach Kristen Hutchison is second on the list with 511 made free throws in 120 games.
