Women's basketball defeats Cheyney at Butova Gym

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - The American International College women's basketball team defeated Cheyney University by a score of 85-65 on Sunday, December 16 at Butova Gym.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Cheyney won the tip and proceeded to score on its opening possession. The Yellow Jackets responded with a 14-1 run, led by senior forwards Dana Watts and Alyssa Guyon, who scored 10 of AIC's 14 points during the run.
  • The Yellow Jackets lead would continue to grow throughout the quarter. AIC would end the first quarter up by 17 points, 26-9.
  • With 7:27 remaining in the first half, AIC was ahead by 26 points after a three-pointer from junior guard Nadia Wooten, 37-11. Shortly after, freshman guard Sabrina Armstrong would extend the AIC lead to 31 after drilling a three-pointer. The Yellow Jackets would head to the break up 50-17.
  • Watts and Guyon started off the second half with consecutive layups, putting AIC up 37 with 8:44 remaining in the third.
  • The Wolves did not quit, taking advantage of four AIC turnovers to go on a 13-point run. The Yellow Jackets would enter the final quarter up 68-39.
  • In the fourth quarter, Cheyney battled hard with the Yellow Jackets, but the lead proved insurmountable as AIC won 85-65.


BUZZWORTHY:

  • The team set several season highs; the Yellow Jackets made 31 field goals, breaking the mark of 29 at Pace on November 28, and also had 22 assists, surpassing the previous high of 19 set in the team's most recent game against Bloomfield.
  • Sophomore guard Ishanna Brown matched her season's best with eight assists.
