Complete game wins for Camargo, Bedard as softball sweeps Le Moyne

SYRACUSE, New York The American International College softball team took on Le Moyne College on Wednesday, April 5 in a doubleheader. The Yellow Jackets swept both games, taking the first 3-2 and the second 3-1 in eight innings.

The Yellow Jackets stand at 6-9overall, with a 3-3 Northeast-10 mark and a 2-2 record in the Southwest Division.

In game one, AIC got on the scoreboard in the second inning as first baseman Alexa DiLeo homered to left-center field and the Yellow Jackets led 1-0. Le Moyne drew level in the third as Sabrina Riley singled, scoring Courtney Case. The Dolphins took the lead in the fourth as Jillian McManus singled to left, scoring Morgan Hope.

In the sixth inning AIC got the bases loaded, and third baseman Kayla Riley stepped up to the plate, drawing a walk that scored the tying run; DiLeo singled in the very next at bat, scoring shortstop Yami Lopez-Perez, who turned out to be the winning run.

Alyssa Camargo was in the circle for the first game and pitched well, notching her second win of the season. Camargo pitched a complete game, giving up seven hits and striking out three.

It took extra innings for AIC to overcome Le Moyne in the second game and for this one Jillian Bedard started with the ball in her hands. Le Moyne grabbed a run right from the get-go as Case tripled to lead off and then a groundout from Ally Nicolosi drove her in.

AIC tied it up in the third as right fielder Ashley Hughes reached on an error and then got to second after a bunt single from second baseman Sarah Baganz. DiLeo came up to the plate next and singled, scoring Hughes.

The pitchers dominated the game the rest of the way, forcing extra innings. It was in the eighth that the AIC bats came to life. Catcher Jamie Mainez singled to get the rally started and then Riley walked. After that, left fielder Kristen Steele singled and the bases were loaded for designated player Kaley Kempf.

Kempf hit a ground ball to second, and Le Moyne tried to get Mainez at the plate but throw went awry, allowing Mainez to score and putting the Yellow Jackets on top. A wild pitch later in the inning scored Steele.

The two runs were all AIC needed to seal the deal as Bedard took care of business in the bottom of the eighth, completing the game and the sweep for AIC.

AIC will face Southern New Hampshire for a doubleheader on Friday, April 7. First pitch for game one at Judy Groff Field is slated for 3:00 p.m.
