Ice hockey concludes season with loss to Mercyhurst

ERIE, Pennsylvania - The American International College ice hockey team ended its season with a defeat at the hands of Mercyhurst University, with a 5-0 final score on Saturday, March 4 at Mercyhurst Ice Center.

AIC's season ends with an 8-20-8 record. Mercyhurst advances to the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Hockey Championship Tournament with a 14-18-4 record.

The game was tight through the first period; each team generated 13 total shots with six of AIC's going on net.

But the Lakers erupted for four goals beginning at 9:00 of the second period, with three goals coming in a span of 4:30. Mercyhurst then added another at the 17:41 mark to push its lead to 4-0 entering the second intermission. The period ended with AIC being outshot 21-8.

AIC out-attempted the Lakers 10-8 in the final frame, but could not break Mercyhurst goalie Brandon Wildung's shutout. Mercyhurst put the game out of reach with a goal to make it 5-0 at 1:08 of the third period.

Freshman Zackarias Skog made 29 saves on the evening, including 17 in a lopsided second period, to end his rookie campaign with a 5-12-6 record.

Junior Johno May and freshman Martin Mellberg each had four shots on net for the Yellow Jackets, while freshman Jared Pike, sophomore Ryan Polin and freshman Dominik Florian each had three total shots on goal. Freshman Hugo Reinhardt won 19 of his 25 faceoffs while also adding a shot on net and a blocked shot.
