OT winner from Jaks sends ice hockey past Army

WEST POINT, New York - Freshman defenseman Janis Jaks's overtime goal sent the American International College ice hockey team past Army West Point, 2-1, on Saturday, February 25 at Tate Rink, in the teams' final game of the regular season.

The goal, which came 1:32 into the overtime frame, was Jaks' fifth of the season and his second goal in as many games. Fellow freshman defenseman Patrik Demel earned the primary assist on the play.

AIC ends the regular season with an 8-18-8 record and a 7-14-7 mark in conference, with the win breaking a seven-game winless streak. The victory also surpasses AIC's win total from last season (seven).

Freshman goaltender Zackarias Skog made 34 stops in net, including all 17 shots he saw in the third period and overtime.

Army got on the board first at 12:32 of the first period, when Taylor Maruya notched an unassisted tally. The score would remain at 1-0 until the 15:53 mark of the third period, when freshman defenseman Nicolas Luka notched the game-tying goal off assists from sophomore forward Shawn McBride and junior defenseman Andrew DeBrincat.

It was the second consecutive matchup in which AIC and Army went to overtime and the fifth out of the last nine dating back to last season, with AIC earning a 4-0-1 mark in the games needing a fourth period.

AIC, the 10 seed for the upcoming playoffs, will move on to face seventh-seeded Mercyhurst in the first round of the Atlantic Hockey Tournament, with the tournament set to begin on Friday, March 3.
