Women's basketball stifles Greyhounds

SPRINGFIELD - The American International College women's basketball team beat the Assumption Greyhounds, 63-42, behind their best defensive performance of the season. The Yellow Jackets allowed just 12 points in the first half.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Yellow Jackets started the game out hot. They scored the first two field goals and held the Greyhounds scoreless for almost four minutes. AIC's defense continued to hold the half-court offense of the Greyhounds as after the first frame, the Yellow Jackets led 18-4.
  • Assumption started to change their offense as they started to drive and draw fouls. In the second quarter, the Greyhounds went 6-8 from the line but just 1-11 from the field. The Yellow Jacket defense held the Greyhounds without a field goal for 11:28 during a run between the first two frames. Meanwhile, the Yellow Jackets offense shot 52% from the field including 71% from three. At the half, AIC led 34-12.
  • The Greyhounds started to make a run early in the second half. Down 36-15, they cut it down to 16, 39-23, with 3:23 left in the third.
  • The Yellow Jackets continued to control the play, outscoring Assumption 17-14 in the fourth quarter as they took the game 63-42.

GAME NOTES:
  • The Yellow Jackets held the Greyhounds to just 42 points, their best defensive game of the season.
  • Sharing was caring for the Yellow Jackets as they recorded a season high 18 assists in the game.
  • Zhane Newman scored her first points in her Yellow Jacket career late in the fourth quarter.
  • For the first time in her career, Guyon has notched back-to-back 20+ point games.
