Ice hockey falls in close contest to Army

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - The American International College ice hockey team fell in a tight contest to Army West Point on Saturday, October 7.

Records: AIC falls to 0-2-0 and 0-2-0 in Atlantic Hockey, while Army begins the season at 2-0-0 and 2-0-0 in conference.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After a scoreless first period, Nick DeCenzo struck first for the Black Knights, giving them a 1-0 advantage just 38 seconds into the second period.
  • Sophomore defenseman Janis Jaks tied things up for the Yellow Jackets at the 8:55 mark of the second period.
  • All of the scoring came in the second period when Brendan Soucie scored at 12:17 to notch the game-winner for the Black Knights.
  • The Yellow Jackets pummeled Army goaltender Cole Bruns in the third period, forcing him to make 13 saves in the frame, but AIC could not tie the game.

NOTEWORTHY:
  • Kevin Collins, a 1972 graduate of AIC, was recognized prior to Saturday's game for his U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame induction this year.
COACH'S CORNER:
  • "The physical part of the game is something that comes with the territory," said AIC head hockey coach Eric Lang. "They are a physical team, Army is probably the most physical team in the country. We didn't back down one bit, and that was something I was proud of in our guys."
  • "I thought we had good pressure to try and tie it," Lang added about the final frame. "Sometimes you are the bug, and sometimes you are the windshield.

  • AIC will play its first road contest of the year at Bentley University on Tuesday, October 10. Puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m.
