PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania-The American International College ice hockey team struggled to generate scoring chances in a 3-0 setback at Atlantic Hockey Conference foe Robert Morris University.
AIC falls to 4-10-6 on the year, with a 3-6-5 AHC mark, while the Colonials rise to 12-6-3 and 8-5-2 in league play.
The Colonials had an early power play opportunity, but freshman keeper
Zackarias Skog made a trio of stops to keep the puck out.
However, RMU would strike first, as a wrist shot from the slot by right wing Daniel Leavens hit the twine at 9:02, the senior's eighth of the year. The hosts would extend the lead to 2-0 on a two-on-one rush, as sophomore left wing Brandon Watt scored his first of the year, an unassisted goal from the left circle that Skog got a piece of but could not keep out at 14:25.
Both teams had power plays in the early portion of the second, but neither amounted to much, as the best chance for either side was a shorthanded bid by junior right wing
Johno May that clanked the outside of the post. The same held true of the next two power plays, one by each team, which for AIC carried into the third.
In the third, however, the Colonials finally cashed in on their sixth power play of the night, as sophomore defenseman Eric Israel ripped a shot from the midpoint through a screen over Skog's blocker for his sixth tally of the season at 6:42.
Skog turned aside 23 shots in the game, falling to 2-6-4 on the year, while his counterpart, fellow rookie Francis Marotte, stopped all 21 shots he faced for his second career shutout and improved to 10-3-2 with the win.
The two teams finish off the weekend series Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
