Ice hockey falls to Canisius in Friday matinee

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - The American International College ice hockey team fell to Canisius College, 4-2, in a Friday afternoon contest at the MassMutual Center.

AIC falls to 7-14-6 on the season with a 6-10-5 mark in Atlantic Hockey play. Canisius improves to 12-10-5 and 11-4-4 in Atlantic Hockey.

Senior captain Austin Orszulak had a two-point night and his second goal in as many games. Freshman goaltender Zackarias Skog had 23 saves in the defeat, to move to 4-8-4 on the season. The Yellow Jackets put 30 shots on the net of Canisius goalie Charles Williams, who made 28 stops to improve to 12-6-3 on the year.

The Golden Griffins, now undefeated in their last six games, continued their impressive play by scoring the first two goals of the game, first an early power-play tally from Matt Hoover just 52 seconds into the contest - Hoover's fifth goal of the year and his fourth against AIC this season.

Dylan McLaughlin pushed Canisius's lead to 2-0 just 27 seconds into the second period. But AIC finally got on the scoreboard at 9:26 of the second period, with a slapshot from freshman forward Blake Christensen, who extended his team lead in points to 19 on the year. Christensen's shot just squeaked between Williams' blocker and body to cut the score in half.

But McLaughlin had another goal late in the second period to push the score to 3-1 in favor of the Griffins. Orszulak cut the score to 3-2 at the 9:11 mark of the third period, when he beat Williams glove side from the left point.

Canisius added a goal at the 17:48 mark from Jesse Pereira to push the game to the final score of 4-2.

The two teams will conclude the weekend series with a 2:05 matchup scheduled for Saturday at the MassMutual Center.
