MANCHESTER, New Hampshire- The American International College women's basketball team rounded out their three game road trip with a visit to St. Anselm on Wednesday, January 18. The Yellow Jackets had the 16-4 lead after the first quarter, but the Hawks flew back and hit a jumper with seven seconds left to give them the 54-53 win.
Alyssa Guyon led the Yellow Jackets with 17 points.
Dana Watts had 14 points and a career-high 19 rebounds. She also added three assists and three blocks.
Despite losing the tip, the Yellow Jackets were on the board first when Watts grabbed the offensive board and put up the shot. She made the basket and drew the foul, but was unable to knock down the free one. They continued the run as the Hawks tried to find shots early in the clock, but the shots did not fall. The Hawks got their first basket on a jumper at the 7:15 mark to make it 6-2. At the media timeout, the Yellow Jackets led 10-2 as the Hawks were shooting just 14 percent. At the end of the first quarter, AIC led 16-4. Watts had eight points and eight rebounds. The Yellow Jacket defense forced eight turnovers and an 18 percent Hawk field goal percentage.
The Hawks coming out of the huddle refocused, knowing that they would not continue to miss shots. They came out and made it a five-point game, 24-19, with just two minutes left in the half. At the half, the Yellow Jackets went into the locker room with a 26-20 lead.
Coming out of the break, the Yellow Jackets had the ball and scored first to extend their lead. They continued and pushed their lead to eight with eight on the clock. The Hawks took the lead with 3:27 on the clock off an AIC turnover. After three quarters, the Yellow Jackets trailed, 44-42.
The Yellow Jackets started the fourth on a Stepney layup. AIC continued to put points on the board and stop the Hawks as they built their advantage up to four, 48-44. With 4:12 left in the game,
Rashana Siders knocked down a three to bring the AIC lead back to five. The Hawks cut the Yellow Jacket lead down to just one with 1:32 left on a jumper by Candace Andrews. On their next possession, the Hawks hit a jumper to take the 52-51 lead. Kristen Hutchison called a timeout to set up a play, but the Hawks locked down all the AIC players and forced the five-second violation. With 38 seconds left, the Yellow Jackets forced their own five second violation to regain possession. Guyon hit a layup with 28 seconds left to give AIC the 53-52 advantage. With seven seconds left, Andrew hit a jumper to give the Hawks the 54-53 victory.
The Yellow Jackets return to action on Saturday, January 21 at 1:30 p.m. when they host Stonehill.
