PROVIDENCE, R.I. Sophomore Shamira Robles (Bronx, N.Y.) scored eight tries and led the team with 40 points on the day, but American International College women's rugby squad fell in the Cup Final to Quinnipiac in the Brown sevens tournament this afternoon.
Freshman Anne-Laurence Harvey (Quebec, Canada) collected seven tries and 37 point on the game while her sister Elizabeth Harvey (Quebec, Canada) had a pair of tries and 11 conversions for 32 points.
The Jackets blitzed their way through pool play by tripling their opponents in points overall, 94-31, en route to a 22-14 victory over Norwich, a 48-0 blanking of West Chester and a 24-17 triumph over Brown.
AIC drew Army West Point in the semifinals and a line-out led to a 60 meter sprint by Anne and Elizabeth added the kick for the 7-0 edge just 1:54 into the game. Army responded, but missed their kick and the Jackets led 7-5 at the half.
The second half was all Yellow Jackets as Anne sandwiched a try between a pair from Robles and Elizabeth nailed all three conversions for the 28-5 final.
However, for the second straight week in the Cup Final it was the power Bobcats of Quinnipiac who went home victorious with a 32-12 triumph. The Bobcats scored three straight tries including opening the game just eight seconds in with a try. Robles sent the Jackets to the break with momentum after a 60 meter sprint and Elizabeth kick for the 17-7 halftime deficit.
Quinnipiac again erupted for three straight tries and even a late Robles 40-meter breakaway was not enough as the horn sounded.
Sophomore Bridget Kahele (Aldie, Va.) collected three tries on the day as the only other multiple try scorers for the Jackets.
AIC returns to action next Saturday as they travel to West Chester for another Varsity Rugby Conference sevens tournament.
