Camargo's Blast Cages Owls as Softball Holds Off SCSU Late for, 4-3, Victory

NEW HAVEN, Conn. Junior Alyssa Camargo (Covina, Calif.) dominated in the circle and at the dish to help lift American International College past Southern Connecticut, 4-3, in Northeast-10 Southwest division softball action this afternoon.

AIC improves to 12-12 on the year and 2-5 in divisional play while SCSU falls to 8-19 overall and 2-8 in the Southwest Division.

The Jackets started quickly scoring in each of the first three innings including a pair of runs in the top of the first on a two-out, two-run single by sophomore Jamie Mainez (Redlands, Calif.).

AIC complemented that with solo scores in the second and third on a run-producing single by senior Jorrdin Miller (Garfield, N.J.) and the first long ball of her career from Camargo for the 4-0 advantage after three complete.

American International did load the bases in the seventh, but were unable to tack on any insurance as the Owls got out of the jam unscathed and used that momentum to make things interesting in the last half inning.

An opening error followed by an RBI double got SCSU on the board and a pair of walks then loaded the bases with no outs. Camargo proceeded to induce a fly-ball and groundout, but both scored runs and the score was 4-3 with two out and the tying run on third. The junior right-hander remained focused and secured the final out with a fly-ball to right to record the victory.

Camargo was dominate in the circle, as well as helping her own cause at the dish going 2-for-2, she only allowed three runs (two earned) while scattering four hits and striking out nine with a pair of walks to improve to 7-5 on the year.

Mainez finished 2-for-3 at the dish with a pair of RBI's while Miller joined Camargo going 2-for-2 on the day as the Jackets outhit the Owls 8-4.

Both teams come right back tomorrow for a double-header to close out the season series with a first pitch at 12 p.m. for game one.
