PLEASANVILLE, N.Y. The American International College softball team split the final day of the 2016 season at Pace University in a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division series at Pace Field Saturday afternoon, winning 4-0 and falling, 3-2.
With the split, AIC ends the year 17-21 overall and 7-12 in the NE-10. The Setters moved to 24-14 overall and 17-7 in conference play.
After a slow offensive series opener on Friday, the Yellow Jackets wasted no time getting it together in Saturday's opener. AIC sophomore Alexa DiLeo (Cheshire, Conn.) doubled down the left field line with two outs to plate senior Jenna Costa (Turners Falls, Mass.) and Kaley Kempf (Oxford, Conn.).
The two went scoreless for five innings until the Yellow Jackets added a pair of insurance runs in the visitor half of the seventh. With runners on first and second, DiLeo was at it again, this time hitting a two-bagger to center field to send junior Shannon Millane (Ellington, Conn.) and senior Lyndsey Letourneau (Paxton, Mass.) home. Her four RBI's was a season-high for the first baseman.
AIC junior starter Jillian Bedard (Meriden, Conn.) tossed her first complete-game shutout of the season, striking out one, walking two and allowing a single Setter hit. With the win, Bedard finished the season with a record of 5-6 and did not allow an earned run in her final three appearances.
American International scattered 12 hits led by senior Jorrdin Miller's (Garfield, N.J.) 3-4 game from the plate. Costa, DiLeo and Kempf all went 2-4 from the dish in a much different outcome than Friday's pitchers dual.
In game two, DiLeo got right to work, reaching on a fielder's choice that plated Miller from third to give AIC a quick 1-0 edge after half an inning. Pace quickly responded with a two-run first to make it 2-1 after one. The Setters added a crucial insurance run in the sixth to take a two-run lead into the top of the seventh.
With one last shot, AIC pitcher Alyssa Camargo (Covina, Calif.) pinch hit for freshman starter Sarah Beliveau (Bristol, Conn.) and reached on a fielder's choice. Mainez pinch hit for junior left fielder Kristen Steele (Newburgh, N.Y.) and the catcher hit an RBI single up the middle to send Camargo home and cut the deficit back to one, 3-2.
Bedard also pinch hit and drew a walk, representing the winning run on first, but the Setters forced Miller to hit a hard line-out to center and killed the threat.
Beliveau allowed three earned off seven hits and struck out one, falling to 4-5 in her debut season. Pace held AIC to three hits, including one from Miller who ended her career with a 4-8 day with a run scored.
