SPRINGFIELD, Mass. The American International College softball team honored its senior's prior to first pitch against Adelphi University Sunday afternoon at Judy Groff Field, but fell to the Panthers in Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division action in five innings, 8-0.
With the loss AIC falls to 15-18 overall and 5-9 in divisional play, while with the win Adelphi improves to 26-15 and 11-3 in conference.
The Yellow Jackets, who return home for a pair with the College of Saint Rose, honored their four seniors before the game. AIC will graduate outfielder Jenna Costa (Turners Falls, Mass.), second baseman Lyndsey Letourneau (Paxton, Mass.), third baseman Jorrdin Miller (Garfield, N.J.) and catcher/designated player, Ainslee Penfield (Greenfield, Mass.).
For the second straight day the Panthers jumped on AIC with a four-run first. AU heavy-hitter Brenna Martini doubled in two runs before getting a free ride home off a Nicole Camera shot over the right field wall. Camera struck again in the third with her second dinger of the day, knocking in Martini again to take a 7-0 lead after three. The Panthers made it eight runs in the fourth, walking in Martini from third for her third run of the day.
AIC batted around four hits including Sarah Beliveau's (Bristol, Conn.) 1-1 day from the plate after coming in as relief for starter Alyssa Camargo (Covina, Calif.) on the mound. Camargo struck out three in 2.1 innings with six earned off six hits. Beliveau allowed one earned and struck out four including the first two batters she faced with a runner in scoring position.
The Yellow Jackets host their final home game Tuesday, April 19 when the Golden Knights pay a pair at the Groff. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
