DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. American International College junior pitcher Alyssa Camargo (Covina, Calif.) posted another solid outing, allowing one earned in game two, but softball dropped a pair to Embry-Riddle Tuesday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets dropped the opener, 4-1, and scored a run in the top of the seventh, but fell short in the finale, 2-1. With the sweep, AIC falls to 1-3 in the early going.
Trailing two runs in the top of the final inning with one out recorded, senior third baseman Jorrdin Miller (Garfield, N.J.) singled down the left field line to get things going. Jacket junior Keymell Cartwright (Johnstown, Ohio) laid a bunt to the Eagles third baseman who threw her out at first, but was able to advance Miller into scoring position. Senior second baseman Lyndsey Letourneau (Paxton, Mass.) proceeded to double to left center in the next at bat, second Miller home and putting the tying run in scoring position with two outs. It was too little, too late, for the Jackets who fouled out to the catcher in the ensuing at bat to end the game, 2-1.
Fresh off a complete game shutout of Stonehill Monday, Camargo came out with similar stuff Tuesday. The junior hurler threw seven more innings, striking out five and allowing a single earned run in the fifth that proved to be the game-winner. The Eagles scored on a fielding error to short in the first.
In the opener, freshman Sarah Beliveau (Bristol, Conn.) got her first career start. The rookie went five innings, allowing one earned off two hits while striking out three. AIC scattered eight hits off ERU pitching and left five stranded.
Trailing 2-0 in the visitor half of the fourth, sophomore Jamie Mainez (Redland, Calif.) singled to left center, sending Miller home from second on the throw. Letourneau stepped up and reached on an error by the short stop, but the final two Jackets went down by way of fielder's choice to end the inning and stranded a pair of baserunners.
AIC junior Kristin Steele (Newburgh, N.Y.) went 3-3 for the game, while Mainez batted 2-3 with the team's lone RBI. She was 3-5 from the plate for the day.
AIC has Wednesday off, but returns to the diamond Thursday, Mar. 10at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla. for a double header against regional foes LIU Post and Wilmington University (Del.) Game one with the Pioneers is slated to start at 1 p.m. with the tilt against the Eagles to start immediately after.
