Softball Splits With St. Michael's, 5-1 Win and 2-1 Loss

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. The American International College softball team split with Saint Michael's College Thursday afternoon at Groff Field, winning 5-1 and dropping the opener, 2-1.

With the split AIC moves to 10-11 overall, while St. Mike's becomes 2-14.

After falling in a pitching duel in the opener, AIC fell behind 1-0 in the visiting half of the first inning with a Danielle Barbato RBI single to left to plate Christina Brazeau.

Yellow Jacket freshman Kayla Riley (Haverhill, Mass.) knotted the score at one apiece in the home half of the second with a single to center field, sending sophomore Jamie Mainez (Redlands, Calif.) home from third.

AIC broke open the game in the third started with senior Jorrdin Miller (Garfield, N.J.) running out an error down the third base line to get on and send junior Kristen Steele (Newburgh, N.Y.) home.

Freshman Kaley Kempf (Oxford, Conn.) scurried home on a Mainez single and subsequent throwing error from the Knights on the throw home. DiLeo pushed Miller home, reaching on an error to short, the last run of a four third for the Jackets.

AIC freshman Sarah Beliveau (3-2) picked up her third win if the season, striking out five and allowing one earned off four hits. Jacket junior Alyssa Camargo (Covina, Calif.) threw all seven innings of game one, allowing zero earned, while striking out six and scattering five hits in the losing effort. Camargo goes to 5-5 on the season.

Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the seventh, AIC tried to sneak past the Purple Knights. Kempf hit a long shot to center field, and after a bobbled catch, Miller crossed home, but the rally ended there.

The Yellow Jackets return to the diamond Saturday, Apr. 2 when they travel to Assumption College for a twinbill with the Hounds. First pitch from Worcester is slated for noon.
