Kempf Hits First Homer As Softball Sweeps Molloy and Mercy in Spring Break Finale

CLERMONT, Fla. The American International College softball team ended their Spring Break Trip with two wins at the National Training Center Friday, downing Molloy, 2-1, and Mercy, 5-4.

With the sweep, AIC evens out and heads back up north with a 4-4 record.

Yellow Jacket junior pitcher Alyssa Camargo (Covina, Calif.) was spectacular all week and finished strong in the win over Molloy. The third-year starter threw seven innings, allowing one earned off nine hits and striking out five. Her only run allowed was a solo shot in the fifth inning. The Lions left six runners on base.

American International single runs in the first and third, but it was enough to hang on for the slim win. Senior Jorrdin Miller (Garfield, N.J.) reached on a fielding error allowing classmate Jenna Costa (Turners Falls, Mass.) to scamper home. The Jackets scored the game-winner in the third. Sophomore Jamie Mainez (Redlands, Calif.) put the ball in play and was thrown out, but junior Kristen Steele (Newburgh, N.Y.) made it home for the eventual game-winner.

In the finale, Mercy jumped out to a 3-0 lead and added a fourth in the third. In the top of the fourth, AIC freshman Kaley Kempf (Oxford, Conn.) connected for the first homerun of her career, a two-run shot that plated Steele.

Things went AIC's way late as the Jackets scored three unearned runs in the sixth to take the lead and held on for the one-run win.

Junior Jillian Bedard (Meriden, Conn.) went 3.2 innings, allowing four earned while scattering six hits. Freshman Sarah Beliveau (Bristol, Conn.) pitched 3.1 innings in scoreless relief. Riley had the team's lone multi-hit game, going 2-2 from the dish.

The Yellow Jackets open the home slate Wednesday, Mar. 16 when Le Moyne College visits the Groff for a pair of games slated to start at 3 p.m.
