ROCHESTER, N.Y. Sophomore Johno May (Mahtomedi, Minn.) netted both goals for American International College as they dropped a, 3-2, decision to Rochester Institute of Technology in Atlantic Hockey Conference action this evening from the Gene Polisseni Center.
RIT improves to 13-12-5 with the victory and 13-7-4 in conference tilts while AIC falls to 6-24-2 overall and 6-17-2 in AHC play.
The Tigers came into this game determined for revenge after being defeated last night and it showed as they jumped to an early 3-0 lead after dominating the opening period. They held the Jackets without a shot for almost the entire frame while collecting a 20-1 edge in shots on goal after the horn sounded.
Senior Josh Mitchell (Osoyoos, B.C.) forced a neutral zone turnover and became the beneficiary off a good pass from sophomore Myles Powell (Courtenay, B.C.) to cash in on the doorstep at 12:08 for the 1-0 lead.
Then, freshman Liam Kerins (Caledon, Ont.) pushed things to a two-goal margin during a 5-on-3 power-play as he sent a wrister from the slot past sophomore Alex Murray (Burlington, Ont.) at 15:26 before Powell followed his own shot to collect his rebound and light the lamp with under a minute to play at 19:03 for the 3-0 advantage after the first 20 minutes of play.
May nearly got AIC on the board off a strong rush with senior Chris Porter (Stoufville, Ont.) at 15:10 of the second, but sophomore net-minder Nick Amato (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) stood tall and squeezed the pads to deny the chance.
However, May would get on the board a few shifts later as freshman Johnny Mueller (St. Louis, Mo.) led the rush up the right side boards into the zone and skated around his defender to saucer a pace across to May for a one-timer inside the slot at 17:01 for the 3-1 score.
May continued his stellar play this week into the final period as he received a great pass at center ice from junior Carson Grolla (Trail, B.C.) and skated into the zone firing low blocker from the slot with a quick wrist-shot to beat Amato at 6:27 of the third period for the 3-2 score.
Powell nearly gave RIT insurance late in the period as he found himself beyond the defense and deked right, but Murray got the left pad to it in the butterfly position to preserve the one-goal deficit with four minutes to play.
The Jackets then opted for the empty net with under a minute to play and generated some good scoring chances, but Amato stood tall as the final score sounded.
Murray stopped an eye-popping 51 shots for a 96 save weekend total, but falls to 6-18-2 on the season while Amato wasn't challenged often and secures his first collegiate victory with 13 saves.
RIT outshot the visitors 54-15 and were 1-for-3 with the man-advantage while AIC went 0-for-2 on the power-play.
AIC returns to action with a non-league affair against No. 11 nationally ranked UMass-Lowell on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. from the Olympia Ice Center.
