WATERBURY, Connecticut- The American International College women's basketball team took a break from conference play on Thursday, December 8 to take on Post University. The Yellow Jackets took the game by a final score of 76-70 thanks in part to double-doubles by
Dana Watts and
Imani Stepney.
Watts led the team with 28 points and 13 rebounds, while Stepney had 15 and 11.
Rashana Siders was the third Yellow Jacket in double figures, as she had 14 points.
The Yellow Jackets took the lead 28 seconds into the game on a jumper by
Tanisha Moyer. The Eagles led much of the first half, including a four-point lead with 4:39 left in the opening frame. With three seconds left, the Yellow Jackets were down, then Stepney drew the foul and went to the line for two. She knocked them both down and gave the Yellow Jackets the one-point advantage going into the second quarter.
At the 7:17 mark of the second quarter, the Yellow Jackets were down one, when Siders knocked down a triple to give the Yellow Jackets the two-point lead. The Yellow Jackets kept their foot on the pedal the remainder of the half. With 20 seconds left in the first half, Watts made two from the stripe to give the Yellow Jackets their largest lead, eight, going into the half, 40-32.
At one point, the Yellow Jackets' lead was 12, but the Eagles rallied back and took the lead at the 2:13 mark. Watts nailed a midrange jumper with half a minute left in the quarter and gave the Yellow Jackets the 54-52 lead after 30 minutes of play. After a 50 seconds of play in the fourth, the teams were tied at 52. Nine seconds later, Watts swished another jumper and put the Yellow Jackets ahead. Over the last minutes of the game, the Yellow Jackets controlled the scoreboard. The Eagles made it a two-point game with five minutes left, but that's as close as they would come.
The Yellow Jackets return to action on Saturday, December 10 at 1:30 when they travel to the University of New Haven to take on the Chargers.
