ORONO, Maine - The American International College ice hockey team fell to the University of Maine, 7-2, to close out a weekend series on Saturday, December 10, at Alfond Arena. AIC moves to 3-8-6 on the year.
Maine opened the scoring with a goal from Mark Hamilton 4:34 into the game, but sophomore Shawn McBride tipped in a goal at 10:16 off a puck from freshman Martin Mellberg to tie things up at a goal apiece.
AIC took the 2-1 lead at 17:14 of the first when freshman Hugo Reinhardt got his second goal of the season, and AIC held that lead for the remainder of the period until Maine had a goal with 0.8 seconds left on the clock to . The Yellow Jackets had most of the offensive opportunities in the first, with a 14-5 edge in shots in the first period.
From there, AIC held a 22-11 shots-on-goal advantage through two periods, but the Black Bears made their shots count, adding two more goals in the second period to push their lead to 4-2. AIC had a few good chances in the period, including a shot off the crossbar by McBride with around eight minutes remaining, and a close chance by senior captain Austin Orszulak that Maine goaltender Rob McGovern stopped between his pads with 1:38 left.
In the third, the floodgates opened, and Maine outshot AIC 19-2 in the final frame and added three more goals to its total. Murray made 16 saves in relief in the third period for freshman Zackarias Skog, who made seven saves through 40 minutes.
AIC will return home on Tuesday, December 13, to close out its 2016 slate with a game against Arizona State at the MassMutal Center. Puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m.
