WORCESTER, Massachusetts - The American International College ice hockey team came back for a draw against the College of the Holy Cross, 4-4, on Friday evening at the Hart Center.AIC moves to 2-3-2 on the campaign and 2-2-1 in Atlantic Hockey.
Freshman Martin Mellberg posted two goals in the contest, including the game-tying goal with 2:51 remaining in regulation. Junior defenseman Andrew DeBrincat had three assists in the contest, including on the equalizer.
"Our group was gritty and resilient again," said AIC head coach Eric Lang."It's becoming a theme of ours.Against a well-coached, very good Holy Cross team, I'm extremely proud of the effort we put forth."
Down by two goals early in the third period, the Yellow Jackets began the comeback starting with senior captain Austin Orszulak, who brought AIC within a score of 4-3 at 9:32 of the third period when he one-timed a drop pass from freshman defenseman Nicolas Luka from the slot. Junior left wing Jackson Dudley also assisted on the tally.
Orszulak's fourth goal of the season gives AIC's captain a four-game goal and point streak.
Mellberg's second goal came on the man advantage, as he buried another rebound from DeBrincat's initial shot from the high slot. Freshman left wing Blake Christensen earned the second helper on the play.
Christensen got AIC on the board first with a power-play goal 12:59 into the first period. He received a give-and-go pass from fellow freshman and center Hugo Reinhardt at the left faceoff dot and slapped it through Holy Cross goaltender Paul Berrafato's legs for Christensen's second goal of the year.
Holy Cross quickly tied things up at 1-1 off a power-play goal of its own from T.J. Moore at 15:24 in the opening frame.
At the 9:36 mark of the second period, Mellberg cleaned up a rebound to give AIC the 2-1 advantage.
The Crusaders scored the next three goals, however, with two man-advantage tallies to head into the second intermission with a 3-2 lead, and adding another goal at 5:01 of the third period to go up 4-2.
