The American International College women's basketball team plays host to the Southern Connecticut State Owls in a Northeast-10 Conference contest at the Henry Butova Gymnasium this evening.

LAST TIME OUT:The Yellow Jackets had a two-game winning streak snapped with an 80-73 loss against Adelphi in Garden City, N.Y. on November 19. Down 62-47 heading into the final frame, the visitors put on a furious rally, scoring 26 in the frame, but they could not overcome the deficit despite 11 of her career-high 22 points in the last ten minutes by Jayda Gilmore. Dana Watts added 20 points and 12 boards to continue her season-long double-double streak, and Imani Stepney also contributed a dozen points.

Southern Connecticut picked up its first win of the season in a big way, earning a 90-55 victory over the University of the District of Columbia in Bridgeport. The Owls scored 22 in the first quarter alone and never looked back, taking a 35-16 lead into the half and expanding it with 26 in the third quarter and a game-best 29 in the fourth frame. Maria Weselyj had a game-best 24, thanks in part to hitting six-three pointers and sinking all four free throws, while Taylor McLaughlin posted a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

LAST TIME THEY MET:AIC swept the Owls last season, winning in New Haven 67-51 on November 24, 2015, and taking a 59-52 win at home on February 10, 2016. Tied 25-25 at the half, the Jackets were able to build a narrow lead heading into the fourth quarter, but the Owls came back to earn a 44-41 edge. That was when Kamika Mason '16 went off, scoring a dozen of her game-high 16 points in the period to put her team on top for good. Watts and Gilmore also added 12 and 11 points, respectively, in the win.

ELECTRIC BATTLE:Expect a high-scoring affair between these teams thanks to Watts and McLaughlin. The two leading scorers for their teams are second and third in points-per-game in the NE-10 and first and second in rebounds in the conference as well. Watts has a slight edge in both categories. They are the only two players in the conference to average a double-double per game to this point in the season. The Owls as a team have the strongest offense in the NE-10, but also allow the most points.

FROM WAY DOWNTOWN:A huge portion of the Owls offense is the deep ball; no team has made more threes (39) or attempted more (101) in the conference than Southern. That will be a test for AIC's defense, which has held opponents to 26.4% shooting from beyond the arc, fourth-best in the NE-10.

GIVETH AND TAKETH AWAY: AIC is one of the best possession teams in the NE-10; their 13.3 turnovers per game is second-fewest in the conference, and their 9.3 steals per game is tied for third-best in the league.

NEXT UP:AIC hosts Roberts Wesleyan at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday in a non-conference contest.
