MANCHESTER, N.H. The American International College women's basketball team used a defensive third quarter to pull away from Southern New Hampshire in Northeast-10 road action Sunday afternoon at SNHU Fieldhouse, 74-48.
With the win AIC improves to 15-0 overall and 8-0 in NE-10 action, while with the loss SNHU falls to 10-5 and 4-5 in conference bouts.
After the extending the lead to double figures in the first two possessions of the third quarter with lay-ins by senior Kamika Mason (Long Beach, Calif.) and freshman Jayda Gilmore (Elkridge, Md.), the Yellow Jackets held the Penmen to just six points in the third stanza and ended the frame on a 9-0 run capped off by a senior Ebony Easter (San Antonio, Texas) three-pointer to push the lead to 19, 52-33.
The six points allowed in the third quarter marks the third time American International has held an opponent to six points or less in a quarter this season.
AIC continued their run in the fourth, opening the stanza with a Danielle Dorsett (Waterbury, Conn.) jumper to move the advantage to 21 points, 54-33. With 3:16 left, junior Tanisha Moyer (Albion , N.Y.) gave the Jackets their largest lead, 26, with a free throw. Moyer also finished the game with the final field goal, a layup, to give AIC the 26-point road victory.
AIC senior Brianna Bishop (Suffield, Conn.) recorded 13 first half points and finished with a game-high 20 points, including a 4-6 day from beyond the arc. Gilmore was the only other Jacket in double figures, registering 10 points as every available Jacket played in the winning effort.
American International out-rebounded the Penmen, 39-27, led by junior Imani Stepney's (Willingboro, N.J.) eight rebounds. She also chipped in eight points. AIC shot over 47 percent from the floor and held SNHU to under 367 percent from the floor for the game.
The Yellow Jackets return to action Wednesday, Jan. 16 when they host Franklin Pierce at Butova Gymnasium. Tip-off with the Ravens is slated for 5:30 p.m.
