SPRINGFIELD, Mass. Freshman Anne-Laurence Harvey recorded 21 points on a trio of tries and conversions, but it was not enough as the women's rugby squad fell to Army West Point by a 29-26 score this afternoon from Abdow Field.
Army jumped to an early 14-0 advantage off conversions by Rebecca Stipp in the 3rd minute and Hannah Whisnant in the 9th minute and Ari Efaw added the conversions for West Point.
AIC responded in a big way in the 19th minute as sophomore Kayla Clark won a turnover in the opponents try zone and got the ball to freshman Ashley Gayle who exploded to midfield before off-loading to classmate Anne-Laurence Harvey who made a cut and took it the rest of the way to the house and added the conversion herself for the 14-7 score.
Harvey then broke free again in the 32nd minute and outran the defense right up the middle to place the ball in the try zone and added the conversion to tie the score at 14 apiece.
Stipp then found the try zone again just before the half to give Army the 19-14 halftime lead.
American International grabbed the lead back in the 47th minute as senior Muneera Patton dove into the try zone and Harvey added the conversion for the 21-19 advantage.
The Black Knights struck back quickly, however, as Efaw stretched into the try zone in the 55th minute to regain a 24-21 advantage.
Senior Lindy Clark then added insurance in the 75th minute with a try as she plunged into the zone for the 29-21 edge. AIC answered quickly just two minutes later thanks in large part to hard running by senior Anna Mbengam got the ball deep and Harvey broke free on the right side for the 29-26 score.
Another late effort from Harvey kept fans on the edge of their seats, but it was not enough as Army stole possession and kicked the ball out of play to end the game.
AIC returns to action on September 13th at home against Norwich at 11 a.m.
