NORTHFIELD, Vt. Freshman Anne-Laurence Harvey (Quebec, Canada) registered 28 points off three tries, five conversions and a penalty kick to help lead the American International College women's rugby squad to their first-ever victory over Norwich University, 48-20, this afternoon.
Sophomore Shamira Robles (Bronx, N.Y.) opened the scoring as she plunged into the try zone after a turnover in the 5th minute for the early 5-0 edge.
The pace of play halted from that point in the first half with the next 20 minutes being back-and-forth scrums with no team gaining a clear edge until the Cadets found pay dirt to tie the game at 5-5 in the 28 th minute.
The Jackets erupted from there scoring 26 unanswered points including 12 in the final five minutes of the first half as senior Anna Mbengam (Randolph, Mass.) and Anne-Laurence Harvey recorded tries with one Harvey conversion and the score was 17-5 at the half.
AIC kept the momentum to start the second frame as Robles found junior Domonique Cammock (Bronx, N.Y.) with a great pass and she sprinted in for the try and Anne-Laurence added her second try of the game on a 100-yard sprint after a goal line stuff on the other end of the field and she converted both kicks for the 31-5 advantage.
Norwich would respond in the 48th minute with a try, but American International kept the foot on the accelerator as the Harvey sisters combined for the final 17 points as freshman Elizabeth Harvey (Quebec, Canada) scampered in to the try zone and her sister added the kick.
Then Anne-Laurence scored the final 10 Jacket points with a penalty-kick, a try and a conversion sandwiched between a pair of Norwich tries for the final score.
AIC returns to action next Saturday as they travel to Army West Point for a Varsity Rugby Conference tilt.
