Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Orszulak Nets Winner In Overtime To Lift Ice Hockey Past Army, 3-2

WEST POINT, N.Y. Sophomore Austin Orszulak (Springfield, Mass.) potted a pair of scores including the game-winner just 18 seconds into overtime to lift American International College past the Army Black Knights, 3-2, in Atlantic Hockey Conference action this evening from Tate Rink.

The Yellow Jackets improve to 3-12-4 on the year and 3-6-4 in conference play while the Black Knights fall to 4-13-2 on the year and 4-11-2 in league action.

Army got on the board first as sophomore C.J. Reuschlein (Flint, Mich.) was able to collect a blocked shot just outside the center of the crease and beat the goaltender low blocker for the 1-0 advantage at 10:39.

However, the Yellow Jackets took advantage of a 5-on-3 power play to tie the contest at 14:06 as sophomore Carson Grolla (Trail, B.C.) passed to senior Nathan Sliwinski (Castle Rock, Colo.) who then found sophomore Austin Orszulak (Springfield, Mass.) who lit the lamp for the equalizer and the 1-1 tie headed into the first intermission.

Both teams skated evenly through the majority of the second period before the Black Knights were able to break the tie on a rebound goal from freshman Nick Decenzo (Hibbing, Mich.) at 12:28 for the 2-1 edge.

Decenzo fired one on net from the slot that was stopped by the chest of sophomore goaltender Hunter Leisner (Garland, Tx.), however, the rebound bounced out in front and Decenzo followed his shot and was able to punch the rebound over the goal line to sound the horn for Army.

Then just a minute and a half later Army had a tremendous chance to extend the lead to a pair with a 2-on-1 break up the ice as junior Joe Kozlak (Duluth, Minn.) found senior Zak Zaremba (Parma, Ohio), but Leisner lunged across the crease from right to left and made a split legged save on the point blank shot to keep it a one goal contest.

The Yellow Jackets once again knotted the game up in the third period this time at 2-2 when freshman Johno May (Mahtomedi, Minn.) secured a loose puck along the end boards, curled around the net on the left side and fired high glove to beat the goaltender with the equalizer at 11:36.

AIC kept the pressure on almost grabbing their first lead of the game during a power play chance as Orszulak found senior Alexander MacMillan (Calgary, Alb.) who sent one across to junior Chris Porter (Stouffville, Ont.), but his quick release was stuffed by Black Knight sophomore Parker Gahagen (Buffalo, N.Y.) to keep the score tied at 14:40.

A late hooking call gave Army the man advantage with just 3:08 to play in regulation and they immediately turned up the pressure as senior Maurice Alvarez (Cleveland, Ohio) reminded us the pipe is still made of iron as he clanked the crossbar at 17:15.

Entering the overtime frame AIC wasted little time as Orszulak was able to clean up the garbage in front of the net off a shot by MacMillan just 18 ticks into the extra period for the 3-2 victory.

This marks the second straight contest AIC has defeated Army less than 20 seconds into overtime as the Yellow Jackets won just 14 seconds into the extra frame in last seasons series finale also at Tate Rink.Jon Puskar '14 netted the winner in that contest and was also assisted by MacMillian.

Army outshot the visitors 45-31, but were 0-for-4 with the man advantage while AIC converted one of five power play chances.

Leisner made 43 stops while improving to 1-5-1on the year and his counterpart, Gahagen stopped 28 pucks and fell to 4-8-1 for the season.

Both teams return to action tomorrow night as they finish the home-and-home set back at the Olympia Ice Center in West Springfield, Mass. with game time slated for 7:05 p.m.
