WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass.-Robert Morris junior David Friedmann (Toronto, Ont.) scored a hat trick as the 20
th-ranked Colonials topped the American International College hockey team 6-0 at the Olympia Ice Center in the weekend finale.
The loss drops AIC to 2-8-2 and 2-4-2 in Atlantic Hockey Conference play, while the Colonials improve to 8-1-3 overall and 6-1-3 in the AHC.
The Colonials held a 14-4 edge in shots in the first frame, but the only goal was by Friedmann, on an odd hop that hit him in front and rolled to the inside of the right post at 4:47. It was Friedmann's fourth of the year.
In the second, the Colonials expanded their edge. Junior defenseman Chase Golightly (Temecula, Calif.) opened the scoring with a shot from the right face off dot in the zone for his first of the year at 4:10, and then Friedmann scored two goals in 31 seconds, making it 3-0 at 10:57 and completing the hat trick at 10:28.
In the third, AIC went on the man advantage, but it was Robert Morris that expanded the lead, as the dynamic duo of senior left wing Cody Wydo (Southgate, Mich.) and junior right wing Zac Lynch (Pittsburgh, Pa.) combined to score the game's only special teams tally, Lynch's fourth of the season at 6:27.
Late in the game, freshman
Jacob Caffrey (Bethesda, Md.) was brought in to get his first action of his collegiate career; unfortunately, the first shot he faced was Wydo on a breakaway, and the Colonials all-time scoring leader hit the net at 17:18 for the eighth time on the campaign to close out the scoring.
Freshman
Alex Murray (Burlington, Ont.) made 26 saves in 56:16; Caffrey only faced the breakaway by Wydo in his 3:44 of play, and for Robert Morris, junior Terry Shafer (Penfield, N.Y.) had 19 stops in the shutout win.
AIC heads to New Hampshire next Saturday for a single game at Dartmouth College.
