ANN ARBOR, Mich.-Sophomore left wing
Austin Orszulak (Springfield, Mass.) scored twice and freshman center
Johno May (Mahtomedi, Minn.) had three assists, but the University of Michigan held on to a 4-1 lead in a 6-3 win over the American International College ice hockey team at Yost Arena.
AIC falls to 2-7-1 on the year and remains 2-3-1 in Atlantic Hockey Association play.
The Jackets jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as, on the power play, senior right wing
Nathan Sliwinski (Castle Rock, Colo.) crossed a pass to May, who dropped it back to sophomore defenseman
Carson Grolla (Trail, B.C.). Grolla slapped it high blocker at 2:16 of the first for his first of the season.
However, the Wolverines scored three times in three and a half minutes, as senior right wing Zach Hyman (Toronto, Ont.) tied it with his fourth of the year at 9:05, senior center Travis Lynch (White Lake, Mich.) put his team ahead at 10:41 with his second of the year, and sophomore left wing Alex Kile potted his fourth on a power play at 12:39 on a one-timer in front.
The momentum carried into the second period, when junior right wing Cristoval Nieves (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) ripped a shot home for his first of the year to make it 4-1 at 7:19.
However, May and Orszulak took over the game in the next span of play. Freshman defenseman
Andrew DeBrincat (Farmington Hills, Mich.) made a play to May, and May then hit Orszulak for a shot that found the net behind sophomore Zach Nagelvoort (Holland, Mich.) for his fifth of the campaign at 8:31.
Then, sophomore right wing
David Norris (Calgary, Alb.) sprang May and Orszulak on a two-on-one; May dished to Orszulak, who ripped a shot bar down past the Edmonton Oilers draft pick in the Michigan net for his sixth of the season at 15:56.
However, the Wolverines were persistent, and in the third period, they broke through again as Lynch came in over the line and snapped a wrist shot high glove at 10:26 to make it 5-3.
Then, on another power play, junior center Andrew Copp (Ann Arbor, Mich.) was left open at the side of the net, and he fired a shot home for his fourth of the season at 12:20 to round out the scoring.
Despite the barrage by the Wolverines, sophomore
Hunter Leisner (Garland, Texas) was strong in the net, stopping 40 shots, including stopping breakaways by Copp and his former junior teammate, sophomore Max Shuart (Northville, Mich.).
AIC returns to the Olympia and Atlantic Hockey action when they host the defending conference champion Robert Morris Colonials for a weekend set beginning Friday November 21 at 7:05 p.m.
