NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y.-The American International College ice hockey team used a three-goal second period to finish a sweep of the Niagara University Purple Eagles, winning 4-2 to earn their first four point weekend of the season.
AIC improves to 2-4-1 on the year and 2-3-1 in Atlantic Hockey play.
Niagara had great pressure in the first ten minutes of the first period and netted the game's first tally as a result at 4:07 on a shot by senior right wing Issac Kohls (Forest Lake, Minn.) that found the twine for his first of the year.
From there, AIC calmed down, and drew a late penalty in the final minute of the frame. Though they failed to score on that or the subsequent power play early in the second, they grabbed momentum.
Then, senior right wing
Matt Cassidy (London, Ont.) stole the puck from a Niagara defenseman and sprung sophomore left wing
Austin Orszulak (Springfield, Mass.). Orszulak fired the puck off the post and in just past the arm of sophomore Jackson Teichroeb (London, Ont.) for his second of the year at 5:53.
Shortly after, AIC advanced into the offensive end again, and junior left wing
Chris Porter (Stoufville, Ont.) dropped a pass to sophomore right wing
David Norris (Calgary, Alb.), who in turn dished to the far side top of the crease where a waiting senior center
Alexander MacMillan (Calgary, Alb.) potted his fourth of the year at 7:49.
Niagara would tie the game at 16:31 after the defense, exhausted by killing three straight penalties including a long five-on-three, allowed sophomore right wing Stephen Pietrobon (Toronto, Ont.) to tip a shot home for his first of the year.
However, the team responded, and on the very next shift, senior defenseman
Steven Hoshaw (Vista, Calif.) passed to Norris, who again got it in front to MacMillan at 17:29 for his fifth goal of the season, putting AIC back in the lead.
From there, rookie goalkeeper
Alex Murray (Burlington, Ont.) handled his business, denying all 12 third-period Niagara shots, and though they pulled Teichroeb for the sixth attacker, it was AIC who finished the scoring, as Orszulak slipped the puck into the empty net at 19:40 for his third of the year.
Murray improves to 2-1-1 on the year with the 40 save performance.
AIC returns to action Friday, November 7 at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst for a non-conference matchup with their Hockey East rivals.
