WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass.-The American International College ice hockey team saw goals from two freshmen, but for the second night in a row surrendered three third-period goals to the Golden Griffins of Canisius in a 4-2 Atlantic Hockey loss at the Olympia Ice Center.
AIC falls to 0-4-1 on the year and 0-3-1 in the AHA.
After a scoreless first period, it was AIC that jumped to a 1-0 lead for the fourth time in five games as freshman defenseman
Andrew DeBrincat (Farmington Hills, Mich.) made a play out of his own end to classmate left wing
Bailey More (Laytonsville, Md.), who then moved the puck forward to freshman center
Jackson Dudley (Edmonton, Alb.). Dudley drove forward into the slot, and as he was knocked down, poked the puck into the net for his first career goal at 4:59.
However, the Griffins struck back in the middle of the frame on the power play, as junior forward Ralph Cuddemi (Concord, Ont.) jammed home a rebound at 11:11 for his fourth of the season.
In the third, Canisius senior forward Cody Freeman took over the game, scoring twice in under three minutes, banging in a rebound at 3:45 of the period for his second of the year, and then spiking the puck into the net at the top of the crease on a power play at 5:24 to extend the lead to 3-1 with his third goal.
The Jackets battled back, and got to within one, as junior left wing
Chris Porter (Stoufville, Ont.) dished a puck back to junior defenseman
Brandon Lubin (Commerce Township, Mich.), who was able to connect a pass to freshman center
Bryant Christian (Moorhead, Minn.) for a shot that found the twine for his first collegiate goal at 12:43.
AIC pressured, pulling the goalkeeper for a sixth attacker in the final minute, but could not get through for the elusive third goal, and late in the frame senior forward Tyler Wiseman (Burlington, Ont.) hit the empty net to seal the win for the visitors.
Sophomore
Hunter Leisner (Garland, Texas) had 31 saves on 34 shots in the loss, falling to 0-2-1 on the year.
AIC hits the road for a set at Niagara on Friday and Saturday at Dwyer Arena as the Atlantic Hockey campaign continues in six days.
