WATERTOWN, Mass.—The American International College men's ice hockey team (12-15-6, 9-12-6 AHA) earned a shocking 4-3 overtime win with their conference foe, the Bentley Falcons (12-16-3, 10-14-3 AHA) in the regular season finale, making the Yellow Jackets the ninth seed in the upcoming Atlantic Hockey Tournament.
The Falcons struck first in the middle frame when sophomore center Alex Grieve (Calgary, Alb.) passed a puck to junior right wing Brett Gensler (St. Charles, Mo.) on a two-on-one; Gensler found junior left wing Andrew Fitzstephens (Schoolcraft, Mich.) in front for his second of the year.
However, AIC was able to tie the game up later in the period, as junior right wing
Jon Puskar (Grosse Ile, Mich.) made a play to freshman left wing
Chris Porter (Stoufville, Ont.), who then hit sophomore center
Alexander MacMillan (Calgary, Alb.) for a one-timer that found the net for his eighth of the year at 17:54 of the period.
In the middle of the third, Bentley got two quick goals to take a 3-1 lead; first, junior defenseman Zach Marginsky (Auburn, N.Y.) went end to end and wired a slapshot home for his second of the year at 7:29 of the period; shortly after, Gensler hit sophomore left wing Brett Switzer (Calgary, Alb.) in the slot on the power play for a shot that became his tenth of the year at 8:49 of the frame.
However, AIC managed two quick strikes of their own, as MacMillan made a pass to Porter, who then found Puskar in front for his eleventh of the year at 9:11; then, senior center
Steve Mele (Bronx, N.Y.) fired a shot; though junior goalkeeper Branden Komm (Williamsville, N.Y.) made the initial save, sophomore center
Brandon Fagerheim (Calgary, Alb.) swept home the rebound to tie the game at 16:25 of the frame with his fifth of the year.
In overtime, a series of unorthodox situations led to an AIC victory. The Jackets pulled senior goalkeeper
Ben Meisner (Halifax, N.S.) with roughly :30 left to get the sixth attacker, but senior defenseman
Jeff Ceccacci (Placentia, Calif.) took a holding penalty. Benley then pulled Komm with the offensive zone draw in their favor. The centers tied up off the draw, and sophomore defenseman
Jake Williams (Duluth, Minn.) and senior right wing
Adam Pleskach (Beausejour, Man.) found junior center
Blake Peake (Lethbridge, Alb.), who threw the puck length of the rink into the open net with just 1.3 left on the clock for his eighth of the year to complete the stunning comeback win.
In goal, Komm stopped 33 of 36 shots for the Falcons to go to 11-17-1 on the year, taking the loss as the goalie who was pulled when the winning goal was scored, while Meisner stopped 34 of 37 shots to move to 11-14-5 on the year.
AIC will head to RIT as the ninth seed in the first round of the Atlantic Hockey tournament; the schedule for the series will be announced later in the week.
