ROCHESTER, N.Y.-The American International ice hockey team dropped a 5-2 Atlantic Hockey contest against the RIT Tigers tonight at the Ritter Arena on the RIT campus.
The loss drops AIC to 3-10-0 on the year and 3-6-0 in the AHA, while RIT improves to 6-7-2 and 5-3-0 in league play.
The Yellow Jackets jumped on the board first and early in the game when junior center
Alexander MacMillan (Calgary, Alb.) found freshman right wing
David Norris (Calgary, Alb.) in front for his second of the season at 3:47 of the period. That capped the scoresheet for the otherwise scoreless and penalty free frame.
In the second, the Tigers dominated, outshooting the Yellow Jackets 23-7 and scoring twice, with senior defenseman Nolan Descoteaux striking on the power play at 4:39 and then freshman forward Garrett McMullen hitting the net at 7:57 to put RIT ahead 2-1.
However, the Yellow Jackets managed to end the frame with the score tied, thanks to freshman left wing
Sean Federow (Niagara Falls, Ont.) finding MacMillan for his team-best seventh of the year at 12:51.
However, despite buckling down defensively in the third, AIC could not find the net again, and RIT scored three goals in rapid succession to earn the win, getting the game winner at 1:20 from sophomore forward Josh Mitchell, an insurance goal from freshman defenseman Alex Perron-Fontaine at 4:25, and another tally from McMullen at 6:13 to close out the scoring.
RIT rookie and Rochester native Mike Ritolo continued his career-introductory hot streak, improving to 5-0-0 since taking over the starting role and making 23 saves on 25 stops, while his classmate at AIC
Hunter Leisner (Garland, Texas) stopped 34 of 39 in the loss to fall to 1-4-0.
AIC returns to action next Friday at 7:00 p.m. in the first of two games at Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine when they take on the University of Maine in a clash between Atlantic Hockey and Hockey East.
