Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Meisner breaks AIC saves record, but Jackets trounced by Lakers, 7-2

ERIE, Pennsylvania—Senior goalkeeper Ben Meisner (Halifax, N.S.) stopped a shot from sophomore defenseman Grant Gettinger (North Olmstead, Ohio) late in the first period to break the college's all-time saves record held by Chance Thede '01 , but the Yellow Jackets (4-8-3, 1-6-3 AHA) were thumped 7-2 by the Mercyhurst Lakers (6-6-1, 6-3-0 AHA) on Saturday afternoon.

The Lakers would strike first as freshman right wing Kyle Cook (Middleburg Heights, Ohio) dished a pass to sophomore center Zac Frischmon, whose one-timer found the net at 9:21 of the first period for his first of the year; it was Cook's first career point.

However, AIC would strike back on an outstanding effort by sophomore center Alexander MacMillan (Calgary, Alb.), who took the puck from his own end and went length of the rink with it, moving through four Lakers before lifting a backhand over the left shoulder of senior goalkeeper Max Strang (Gilbertsville, Penn.) for his second on the year at 10:15 of the period.

The Lakers would then erupt for a four-goal middle period. Tallies came from sophomore right wing Daniel Bahntge (Westlake, Ohio) scoring his fifth from classmate and right wing Matthew Zay (Glendale, N.Y.) and junior left wing Trent Frey (River Falls, Wis.) at 8:29, sophomore right wing Chris Bodo netting his sixth (St. Thomas, Ont.) from freshman defenseman Justin Stevens (Brantford, Ont.) and junior center Kyle Just (Arnprior, Ont.) at 13:09, senior left wing Grant Blakey (Canton, Ohio) scoring his fourth from sophomore defenseman Tyler Shiplo (Oakville, Ont.) and junior center Daniel O'Donoghue (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) at 14:56, and Bodo again from Zay and sophomore left wing Nardo Nagtzaam (Nijmegen, Netherlands) at 18:24.

Bahntge then scored twice in the third to complete the hat trick, tipping in a slapshot from freshman defenseman Mychal Monteith (Toldeo, Ohio) at 5:59 for his sixth of the year, and then jamming a puck in on a goal-mouth scramble at 6:28 for his seventh of the year, assisted by Zay and sophomore left wing Ryan Misiak (Shelby Township, Mich.) to chase Meisner from the game.

The Yellow Jackets got one back late, as sophomore center Brandon Fagerheim (Calgary, Alb.) spring sophomore right wing Jason Popek (Hamilton, Ont.) on a breakaway; Popek buried a shot for his third of the year at 16:21 to close the scoring out.

In goal, Strang earned the win with 26 saves on 28 shots to improve to 4-3-0 on the year; for AIC, Meisner stopped 24 of 31 shots over 46:28 in the loss, dropping to 3-7-3; sophomore goalkeeper Chandler Long (Point Lookout, N.Y.) went seven-for-seven in his 13:32 of play.

AIC will next take the ice in Storrs, Conn. when they battle the University of Connecticut Huskies in an Atlantic Hockey Contest in the first round of UConn's Holiday Tournament on December 29 at 7:05 PM.
