AIC drops 4-1 decision to Canisius in weekend finale

BUFFALO, New York—The American International College men's hockey team (3-6-3, 0-4-3 AHA) dropped a 4-1 decision against the Canisius Golden Griffins (3-6-4, 2-2-2 AHA) in the back end of their two-game weekend series.

Canisius co-captain and senior right wing Torrey Lindsay (Grosse Isle, Man.) got the scoring started with his second of the year at 9:24, banging home a rebound on a shot by sophomore center Mitch McCrank (Haileybury, Ont.); the goal was also assisted by senior co-captain left wing Preston Shupe (Weyburn, Sask.)

The Griffins then scored what proved to be the game winner as junior right wing Kyle Gibbons (Westlake, Ohio) rocketed a one-timer past sophomore keeper Chandler Long (Point Lookout, N.Y.) on a pass from McCrank; junior defenseman Ben Danford (Stillwater, Minn.) also had the assist on Gibbons' third of the season, which came at 14:39 of the first on the power play.

After a scoreless middle frame, the Jackets got back within one, as a netmouth scramble set up for sophomore center Brandon Fagerheim (Calgary, Alb.) to push home the rebound of a shot by senior right wing Nick Grasso (Smithtown, N.Y.) for his first of the year at 7:27 of the final period. Freshman left wing Colton Cyr (Nanaimo, B.C.) also assisted on the goal for his first point as a Yellow Jacket.

However, the Griffins PP would strike back, as Gibbons and Danford connected with sophomore left wing Doug Beck (Plymouth, Mich.) at 14:31 of the period for his third of the year; they would then add and empty net goal at 19:28 as senior defenseman Ben Parker (Port Perry, Ont.) and Lindsay connected to sophomore center Matthew Grazen (East Amherst, N.Y.) for his second of the year to close out the scoring.

In goal, Long made 23 saves on 26 shots to fall to 1-1-0 on the year, while junior goaltender Tony Capobianco (Mississauga, Ont.) denied 30 of 31 shots in the win, improving to 2-6-4.

AIC next takes the ice at Tate Rink in West Point, New York for a single Atlantic Hockey matchup against the Army Black Knights on Saturday, December 2 at 7:05 PM.
