Gensler powers Falcons past AIC Hockey

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--National scoring leader junior right wing Brett Gensler (St. Charles, Mo.) was one of five Falcons with two or more points as Bentley (4-4-0, 3-2-0 AHA) put seven pucks in the net on their way to a 7-3 Atlantic Hockey win over the Yellow Jackets (3-5-1, 0-3-1 AHA).

The Falcons struck early when freshman center Derek Bacon (Calgary, Alb.) tipped a shot home at 2:38 of the first period for his second of the year; the assists were to senior right wing Brett Hartung (Tallahassee, Fla.) and senior left wing Joe Campanelli (Pierrefonds, Que.)

AIC would tie it up in the first frame, as junior center Blake Peake (Lethbridge, Alb.) passed to the point for senior defenseman Jeff Ceccacci (Placentia, Calif.) to one-time a shot that was deflected in by senior right wing Adam Pleskach (Beausejour, Man.) for his fourth of the year at 12:19 of the first. The goal was a power play tally, coming with Campanelli in the box for tripping.

The Falcons were able to score first in the middle frame, as junior left wing Justin Breton (Fitchburg, Mass.) connected with freshman defenseman Michael Reardon (Norwood, Mass.) for a shot that was redirected into the goal by sophomore left wing Alex Grieve (Calgary, Alb.) for his fifth of the year. The goal was at 4:58.

Bentley then extended the lead as Gensler sent Grieve in on a breakaway; though senior goalkeeper Ben Meisner (Halifax, N.S.) made a spectacular initial save, Breton popped the rebound in far side to make it 3-1 at 12:30. It was Breton's fifth of the year.

The Jackets got one back on a scrum in front as senior defenseman Chris Markiewicz (Calgary, Alb.) threw a pass to freshman defenseman Brandon Lubin (Commerce Township, Mich.), who hit Peake for a one-timer on the far side of the slot that beat freshman goalkeeper Gabe Antoni (Lansdale, Pa.) at 17:16 for his first of the season.

However, AIC gave it right back. On a turnover in the neutral zone, junior defenseman Zach Ledford (Folsom, Calif.) made a play to freshman right wing Tyler Krause (Kelowna, B.C.) whose shot gave a rebound that classmate Andrew Gladiuk (White Rock, B.C.) was able to push home for his sixth of the season at 17:34.

From there, the Falcons were able to dominate the third frame. Freshman defenseman Matt Blomquist (Blaine, Minn.) connected with Gensler, who teed up sophomore defenseman Steven Weinstein (Los Angeles, Calif.) for a one-timer that scored Bentley's only power play tally of the night, coming with senior center Steve Mele (Bronx, N.Y.) in the box and at 1:24; it was Weinstein's fourth of the campaign.

Gensler then tallied his fifth from Grieve and Breton at 8:20 of the period to give that unit each a goal and two assists on the night; Campanelli scored his second from Bacon and Hartung to finish the scoring for the Falcons at 10:24, with that goal coming against sophomore keeper Chandler Long (Point Lookout, N.Y.)

AIC would get a late goal from Mele, who jammed in his own rebound for his second of the year at 18:10, with junior left wing Jon Puskar (Grosse Ile, Mich.) and Pleskach adding the helpers.

In net, Meisner dropped to 2-5-1, stopping 21 of 27 in 50:14, while Long stopped six of seven in 9:46 and remains 1-0-0 on the year; Antoni earned his first win in his first game as a Bentley Falcon, denying 29 of 32 AIC shots in 59:34.

Overall, Bentley outshot AIC 32-30, with the shots even in each of the first two frames and the Falcons holding a 15-13 edge in the final frame.

The Jackets head to Bridgeport, Conn. to play at the Webster Bank Arena against conference rival Sacred Heart University for a 4:00 PM start. The Webster Bank Arena is home to the AHL's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, making it the second time the Jackets have played this year in an AHL arena.
