WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The American International College men's ice hockey squad earned a 4-3 win in a non-conference contest over the University of Alabama-Huntsville on Saturday evening at Olympia Ice Center. The Yellow Jackets improve to 2-3-0 overall, while the Chargers fall to 2-5-1 overall.
Senior forward
Richard Leitner (Los Alamitos, Calif.) buried a shot past Alabama- Huntsville senior goalie John Griggs (Barrington, Ill) to give AIC a 1-0 lead at 3:17 into the first period. Sophomore forward
Matt Cassidy (London, Ont.) earned the assist on Leitner's goal.
Sophomore forward Doug Reid (Innisfill, Ont.) knotted the contest at 1-1 four minutes into the second period off a dish from junior center Mat Hagen (Ottawa, Ont.).
The Yellow Jackets took a 2-1 lead at 5:08 in the second after junior forward
Jon Puskar (Grosse, Ile.) found the back of the net after being released from a tripping penalty. Senior forward
Adam Pleskach (Beausejour, MB) earned the assist on Puskar's goal.
The Chargers sophomore left wing Michael Webley (Stittsville, Ont.) tied the contest at 2-2 10:24 into the second period off a pass from sophomore right wing Jeff Vanderlugt (Richmond Hill, Ont.).
Pleskach scored his first goal at 16:54 to put AIC ahead 3-2, while scoring again at 18:57 to give the Yellow Jackets a 4-2 lead. Senior defensemen
Jeff Ceccacci (Placentia, Calf.) earned an assist on both goals, while junior defensemen
Nick Campanale (Chester Springs, PA.) and junior forward
Blake Peake (Lethbridge, AB) each earned one assist.
Webley scored the Chargers last goal to make it 4-3 contest in favor of AIC.
Sophomore goaltender
Chandler Long (Point Lookout, N.Y.) made 22 saves in net to earn his first career victory, while Griggs made 29 saves in the loss.
The Yellow Jackets outshot Alabama-Huntsville 33-25.
AIC will next host the RIT Tigers in an Atlantic Hockey matchup Friday November 2 at 7:05 PM.
