Yellow Jackets Fall in Home-And-Home Opener with Sacred Heart, 4-2

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The American International College men's ice hockey team dropped a 4-2 decision against Sacred Heart University on Friday night at the Olympia Ice Center. The Pioneers are now 2-22-1 overall and 1-16-1 in conference play, while the Yellow Jackets are now 4-18-2 overall and 3-12-2 in Atlantic Hockey.

Freshman forward Drew George (Regina, SK) opened the contest with a shot to the top of the net off a pass from senior forward Matt Gingera (Winnipeg, MB) and junior Eric Delong (Oakville, MB). Sacred Heart took the 1-0 lead heading into the second period.

Sacred Heart scored one goal half way through the second period to earn a 2-0 lead, while junior forward Ben Ketchum (Greenwich, CT) added the Pioneers third goal just 51 seconds into the third period.

AIC finally got on the board when freshman forward Matt Cassidy (London, Ont.) found the back of the net off a dish from junior forward Steve Mele (Bronx, N.Y.) and freshman forward Nathan Sliwinski (Castle Rock, Colo.) to make it a 3-1 contest.

Sophomore forward Chad Filteau (Regina, SK) scored Sacred Heart's last goal at 17:25 in the third. The Yellow Jackets pulled junior goaltender Ben Meisner for the extra man advantage. AIC benefited when senior forward Chris Markiewicz (Calgary, Alb.) took a shot from the blue line and netted his first goal of the season for a 4-2 final in favor of the Pioneers.

Junior goaltender Steven Legatto (Kelowna, BC) stopped 45 saves in the win, while Meisner stopped 20 in the loss.

The Yellow Jackets outshot Sacred Heart 47-24.

The two teams will finish the series in Milford, Conn. At the Mildford Ice Pavilion for a 7:05 p.m. Atlantic Hockey contest.
