Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Third Period Rally Lifts Canisius past AIC, 5-3

Box Score

Buffalo, N.Y. – A late third period rally pushed Canisius past the American International College men's ice hockey team 5-3 on Sunday evening. With the loss the Yellow Jackets fall to 5-22-3 this season and to 5-18-3 in Atlantic Hockey play, while the win improves the Golden Griffins to 15-12-5 overall and to 13-9-4 in the conference. Forwards, junior #Steve McLeod# (Atikokan, Ont.) and sophomore #Nielsson Arcibal# (Vista, Calif.) each tallied three points in the loss for AIC.

Canisius jumped out to an early two goal lead, as sophomore forward Scott Moser (Tonawanda, N.Y.) and senior defenseman Carl Hudson (Smooth Rock Falls, Ont.) each buried a goal in the games first eight-minutes. AIC finally got on the board with just over a minute remaining in the opening period when sophomore defenseman #Rob Blanchette# (South Boston, Mass.) found the back of the net with assists from McLeod and Arcibal.

The Yellow Jackets tied the score at 2-2 midway through the second period when McLeod netted his seventh goal of the season with assists from Arcibal and freshman forward #Adam Pleskach# (Beausejour, Man.). The tie was short lived as the Golden Griffins regained the lead at the 16-minute mark when sophomore forward Dave Kostuch (Richmond Hill, Ont.) socred.

AIC again tied the score, this time seven-minutes into the third period as McLeod lit the lamp for the second time on the evening. Arcibal and freshman defenseman #Chris Markiewicz# (Calgary, Alb.) dished out the assists on the goal. But Canisius again would break the tie as junior forward Vincent Scarsella (Lackawanna, N.Y.) buried, what would prove to be, the game winning goal at 12:06 on the power-play. The Golden Griffins would add an empty netter with one-second remaining in regulation for a 5-3 victory.

Freshman goalie #Ben Meisner# (Halifax, N.S.) turned aside 30 shots in the loss, while senior Andrew Loewen (Winnipeg, Man.) claimed the win with 20 saves.

The Yellow Jackets were outshot 35-23 on the evening, but held a 10-9 advantage in the second.

Next up, AIC finishes out their regular season against Army in a home-and-home series, beginning on Friday at 7:05 p.m. with the Yellow Jackets final home game of the season at the Olympia Ice Center.
