WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Robert Morris scored twice in the later stages of the third period as it recorded a 6-3 victory over the American International men's ice hockey team Sunday afternoon at the Olympia Ice Center. The Colonials improved to 2-0-0 overall and in Atlantic Hockey play, while the Yellow Jackets fell to 0-2-0 overall and in league play.
AIC trailed by two in the third period before sophomore forward
Adam Pleskach (Beausejour, Man.) scored at the 8:07 mark of the third. Junior forward Ron Cramer (New Wilmington, Pa.) put the Colonials back up by two at 13:25 and junior forward Trevor Lewis (Lilitz, Pa.) netted his second goal of the game three minutes later for the 6-3 final.
The Yellow Jackets opened the scoring when senior forward
Tom Mele (Bronx, N.Y.) scored 7:37 into the game. Robert Morris answered with three goals to end the period and give itself a lead it would never give up.
Lewis scored 10:38 into the first period on the power play to tie the game at one. Freshman forward Colin South (Sewickley, Pa.) scored two and a half minutes later to give the Colonials the lead for good.
Senior forward
Steve McLeod (Atikokan, Ont.) scored 12:52 into the second period on the power play to pull AIC back within one, 3-2, after two periods. Robert Morris answered back when sophomore defenseman Brendan Jamison (Pittsburgh, Pa.) scored 5:40 into the third period to give the Colonials a 4-2 lead.
Junior goaltender Brooks Ostergard (Chargin Falls, Ohio) made 28 saves in earning the victory for Robert Morris, while sophomore goaltender
Ben Meisner (Halifax, N.S.) stopped 42 in the loss for the Yellow Jackets.
The Colonials outshot AIC 48-31 and were 1-3 on the power play. The Yellow Jackets were 1-2 with the man-advantage.
AIC will host Holy Cross on Friday night for a 7:05 p.m. Atlantic Hockey contest at the Olympia Ice Center.
