Yellow Jackets Take on Army in Final Regular Season Series

SETTING THE SCENE: This weekend's home-and-home series is the final of the regular season for the American International College Yellow Jackets as they take on the Army Black Knights.

ABOUT AIC: The Yellow Jackets enter this weekend's final regular season series with a record of 5-26-1 overall and a record of 5-21-0 in Atlantic Hockey play after splitting with Sacred Heart last weekend. AIC lost the first game of the home-and-home 6-3 and then claimed their first victory of 2009 in the back end of the series 2-1. In the series opener, the Pioneers where first to break the 0-0 tie as they scored twice in the first four-minutes of play. Junior Chris Campanale got the Yellow Jackets on the board when he scored at 7:23 of the first period with assists from freshmen Michael Penny and Luciano Primiani. Sacred Heart added another goal late in the period taking a 3-1 lead into the first intermission. Campanale tallied his second goal of the game 4:05 into the second period with assists from sophomores Steve McLeod and Dan Ramirez. The Pioneers tacked on another goal to end the second period with a 4-2 lead. Senior David Turco netted a power-play goal in an attempt to spark a comeback early in the third period, but it was not enough as Sacred Heart found the back of the net two more times, including one on an empty net to preserve the 6-3 win. Ramirez made 19 saves on the night for AIC. In the back end of the home-and-home, the Pioneers were again the first to crack the scoreboard as sophomore Even Mladenoff scored just 4:17 into the first period. McLeod tied the score at 1-1 when he lit the lamp on the power-play with assists from senior Matt Woodard and junior Dean Yakura. With less than five-seconds remaining in the period, McLeod found the back of the net for the second time, and what would prove to be the game winning goal. After two scoreless periods the Yellow Jackets held on for their first victory in their last 18 chances. Senior Tom Fenton stopped 14 shots in recording the victory for AIC.

WEEKLY HONORS: Turco, Campanale, and McLeod were all named to the Atlantic Hockey honor roll for their performances in last weekend's home-and-home with Sacred Heart. Turco tallied a goal and an assist this past weekend. He netted a power-play goal in the weekend opener then handed out an assist on the game winning goal in the back end of the series. Campanale netted two goals in the first game of the series with Sacred Heart. He scored the Yellow Jackets first goal in the opening period of play, and then tallied his seventh goal of the season early in the second period. McLeod recorded two goals and an assist in the home-and-home with the Pioneers. He dished out an assist in the first game then found the back of the net twice in the second game, including one goal on the power-play, to propel AIC to victory.

ABOUT ARMY: The Black Knights come into this weekend's home-and-home series with a record of 10-17-5 this season and are 9-12-5 in the conference after going 0-1-1 in last weekend's series with RIT. Army lost the series opener 3-2 then pulled out a 1-1 overtime tie in the series finale. Junior Owen Meyer put the Black Knights up 1-0 when he netted a power-play goal 2:02 in to the first period with assists from classmate Eric Sefchik and freshman Marcel Alverez. The lead lasted until the last minute of the opening period when junior Stevan Matic tallied a shorthanded goal. Freshman Tyler Brenner opened the second period scoring when he found the back of the net just 1:04 into the period, giving the Tigers a 2-1 lead. Army cancelled the lead just 44-seconds later when freshman Bryant Skarda scored his third goal of the season with assists from classmate Kyle Maggard and senior Will Ryan. Senior Jesse Newman broke the tie when he scored what would prove to be the game winning goal on the power-play, just after the midway point of the period, giving RIT a 3-2 lead. Sophomore Jay Clark made 21 saves in the loss for the Black Knights, while Jared DeMichiel stopped 18 shots in the win. After a scoreless first period in the back end of the series, the Tigers were first on the scoreboard when senior Brennen Sarazin lit the lamp on the power-play just 1:32 into the second period. The RIT lead lasted until 1:02 of the third period, when freshman Mark Dube tallied his fourth goal of the season to send the game into overtime. Classmate Mike Hull and senior Mark Tilch dished out the assists on the goal. Neither team scored in overtime as the game ended in a 1-1 draw. Clark stopped 42 shots in the tie for Army, senior Louis Menard made 35 saves for the Tigers.

ARMY LEADERS: Meyer leads the Black Knight offense with a team leading 16 goals and 14 assists for 30 points this season, while Sefchik is second with 26 points including eight goals and 18 assists. Sophomore Cody Omilusik is third on the team in points with 25, scoring 13 goals and handing out 12 assists. Hull has recorded four goals and 12 assists for 16 points, while senior Zach McKelvie rounds out the top five scorers with five goals and 10 assists for 15 points.

AIC LEADERS: Campanale leads the Yellow Jackets in scoring with 17 points including seven goals and 10 assists, while McLeod is second with six goals and 10 assists for 16 points this season. Freshman Nielsson Arcibal is next with three goals and a team leading 11 assists for 14 points, while Penny is right behind him with 13 points including six goals and seven assists. Senior Chad Richardson rounds out the top five scorers with seven goals and five assists for 12 points this season.

THE LAST TIME THEY MET: The two school split a weekend home-and-home on November 7-8, 2008, with the Yellow Jackets winning 4-3 at home in the series opener, and Army taking a 3-1 victory at Tate Rink in the back end. Campanale, classmate Josh Froese, sophomore Tom Mele, and freshman Rody Selk each tallied a goal in the first game for AIC, while Mele tallied the Yellow Jackets only goal in the second game.

ALL-TIME SERIES WITH ARMY: The Black Knights lead the all-time series with a record of 49-14-2 and have gone 7-1 against AIC over the past two seasons.
