Yellow Jackets Set for UConn on Tuesday Night

SETTING THE SCENE: Tonight's conference match-up is between the visiting Huskies of the University of Connecticut and the host Yellow Jackets of American International College.

ABOUT AIC: The Yellow Jackets enter tonight's contest with a record of 4-24-1 this season and are 4-19-0 in Atlantic Hickey play after getting swept in this past weekend's series at Canisius. In the first game, AIC lost 3-0, but played well as they outshot the Golden Griffins 31-26. Canisius took an early lead as junior Jason Weeks found the back of the net with less than two-minutes remaining in the first period. After a scoreless second period, sophomore Pat Kenney gave the Golden Griffins a two-goal lead when he tallied his fifth goal of the season, at 2:06 of the third period. With three-minutes remaining senior John Patera capped off the victory for Canisius when he netted the game's final goal. Senior Tom Fenton stopped 23 shots on the night for the Yellow Jackets, while junior Andrew Loewen made 31 saves in the victory for the Golden Griffins. In the weekend finale, AIC lost 5-1, but again outshot their opponent 30-24. Weeks put Canisius out to a 1-0 lead when he scored a power-play goal 6:48 into the opening period of play. Junior Carl Hudson made it a 2-0 game when he lit the lamp just after the midway point of the period. The Yellow Jackets only goal of the night came off of the stick of junior Dean Yakura as he netted a power-play goal, for his first goal of the season. Classmate Chris Campanale and freshman Luciano Primiani dished out the assists on the goal. The Golden Griffins reclaimed the two-goal lead in the second period as Hudson tallied his second goal of the night. Canisius then added two more goals in the third from freshman Wes Love and sophomore Eric Rex for the 5-1 win. Sophomore Dan Ramirez made 16 saves on the night for AIC and classmate Jake Anderson had three saves of his own. Loewen made 29 stops in the win.

AIC LEADERS: Campanale leads the Yellow Jackets offense with 15 points on the year including 5 goals and 10 assists, while sophomore Steve McLeod and freshman Nielsson Arcibal are tied for second with 12 points each including four goals and eight assists, and three goals and nine assists respectively. Penny and senior Chad Richardson are next in points tied at 11 with six goals and five assists each.

ABOUT CONNECTICUT: The Huskies enter tonight's game with a record of 6-23-1 this season and are 5-16-1 in the conference after being swept by Mercyhirst this past weekend. In the first game, Connecticut lost 6-3 but played well as the outshot the Lakers 37-24. Mercyhusrt got on the scoreboard first as freshman Phil Ginand found the back of the net with less than a minute remaining in the first period. The Lakers went up 2-0 when sophomore Brandon Coccomiglio tallied his seventh goal of the season early in the second period. Connecticut's first goal came on the power-play when sophomore Chris Waterstradt lit the lamp midway through the period. Coccomiglio reclaimed the two-goal lead for Mercyhurst when he netted his second goal of the game, this time on the power-play. Junior Chris Ochoa made the score 3-2 when he netted a goal for the Huskies early in the third period. After the Lakers tallied another goal, pushing the score to 4-2, Ochoa found the net for the second time in the game attempting to spark a comeback, but Mercyhurst was just too much. The Lakers added two more late goals, including one on an empty net, for the 6-3 victory. Junior Beau Erickson stopped 18 shots on the night for Connecticut, while sophomore Ryan Zapolski made 34 saves in the victory. In game two of the weekend, the Lakers rolled to a 7-4 victory to complete the sweep. The Huskies jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Ochoa tallied his third goal of the weekend just 55-seconds into the game. Mercyhurst quickly responded as sophomore Mike Gurtler and senior Matt Pierce each scored before the end of the first period. The Lakers went up 3-1 when Ginand netted a goal at 11:55 of the second period. Ochoa cut the Mercyhurst lead in half as he scored his second goal of the game just two minutes after Ginand's goal. After the two school exchanged goals early in the third period, making the game 4-3, the Lakers went on a tear as they fired off three goals in a row taking a 7-3 lead. The Huskies added a goal late but ran out of time as Mercyhurst took the 7-4 win. Erickson made 15 stops before being replaced by sophomore Brad McInnis who had 14 saves of his own. Zapolski had 25 saves in the victory for the Lakers.

CONNECTICUT LEADERS: Sophomore Jason Krispel leads the team in scoring with two goals and 20 assists for 22 points for the season, while Ochoa is right behind him with 21 points including 14 goals and seven assists. Freshman Marcello Ranallo is third on the team with six goals and 14 assists for 20 points, while sophomore Andrew Olson is fourth with 10 goals and seven assists for 17 points.

THE LAST TIME THEY MET: The Huskies recorded a 3-1 victory at the Olympia Ice Center on January 27, 2009.

ALL-TIME SERIES WITH CONNECTICUT: Connecticut leads the series with a record of 36-33-1.
