Ice hockey Records First Tie of the Season

Moontownship, Pa. – The American International College men's ice hockey team tallied its first tie of the season Sunday evening as they ended their weekend series with Robert Morris playing to a 1-1 final score. The Colonial's were the Yellow Jackets final non-conference opponent of the season and with the tie their record moves to 4-14-1 for the season, while Robert Morris' record moved to 4-10-3. Sophomore #Dan Ramirez# (Rochester, N.Y.) stopped 35 shots on the night.

After a scoreless first period, sophomore #Tom Mele# (Bronx, N.Y.) scored his second goal of the weekend to put AIC on top 1-0. Sophomore #Greg Vatrano# (East Longmedow, Mass.) and senior #Matt Woodard# (St. Louis Park, Minn.) had the assists on Mele's goal.

The Yellow Jackets held a 1-0 lead until the 9:33 mark of the third period, when Colonial's sophomore Scott Kobialko (Spruce Grove, Alb.) found the back of the net on the power play with assists from freshman Josh Jones (Scenery Hill, Pa.) and sophomore Kyle Burton (Calgary, Alb.).

Junior netminder Wes Russell (Springfield, Ill.) made 27 saves in the tie for Robert Morris.

The Colonials outshot AIC 36-28 and 15-3 in the third period.

Next up, the Yellow Jackets take on conference foe Holy Cross in a weekend home and home series beginning on Friday at 7:05 p.m. in Worcester.
