Ice Hockey Set for Weekend Home-and-Home with Army

SETTING THE SCENE: This weekend's Atlantic Hockey home
and home series is between the Black Knights of Army and the
American International College Yellow Jackets.

ABOUT AIC: The Yellow Jackets enter this weekend's contests
with a record of 0-6-0 for the season and are0-4-0 in Atlantic
Hockey after losing twice to Canisius last weekend. In the first
game the Golden Griffins recorded a 3-2 victory over AIC.
Canisius jumped out to an early 1-0 lead scoring just 1:57 into
the first period when senior Spencer Churchill found the back of
the net. The Golden Griffins pushed their lead to 2-0 as Rookie
of the Month, freshman Dave Kostuch netted his fourth goal of
the month. The Yellow Jackets entered the first intermission
down 2-0, but came out in the second period playing their best
hockey, as they have done all season long scoring four of their
eight total goals during this period. Rookie of the Week,
freshman Michael Penny scored twice in the second period to
tie the game at 2-2. Penny received assists on his first goal from
juniors Frankie DeAngelis and Andy Gevorkian, and an assist
from classmate Nielsson Arcibal on his second goal. Canisius
broke the 2-2 tie scoring just 43-seconds into the third period.
Junior Carl Hudson scored what would prove to be the game
winning goal for the Golden Griffins, as they went on to win 3-
2. In the second game Canisius again struck first as junior Josh
Heidinger netted the first of his three goals on the evening 7:15
into the first period. At the end of the first period, the Golden
Griffins were up 1-0. Kostuch pushed their lead to 2-0 as he
found the back of the net at the 6:20 mark in the second. Just
scored 2:24 later Heidinger scored to make the game 3-0 at the
end of two periods. In the third period the Yellow Jackets looked
to make a comeback as Penny scored his third goal of the
weekend, with assists from junior Mike McMillan and Arcibal
making the score 3-1. Heidinger capped off his hat-trick
scoring on an empty net to give the Griffins the 4-1 victory and
the weekend sweep.

ABOUT ARMY: The Black Knights come into this weekend's
home and home series with AIC with a record of 1-3-1 for the
season and are 1-2-1in the conference after a weekend series
with Sacred Heart, where they recorded a win and a tie. In the
first game Army registered a 6-3 victory over the Pioneers.
Junior Owen Meyer scored twice and had two assists in the win
for the Black Knights. Assisting on his first goal was sophomore
Cody Omilusik, while freshman Marcel Alvarez and senior Matt Hickey
dished out assists on his second goal. Hickey, Omilusik, sophomore Joey Ammon,
and freshman Kyle Maggard scored one goal each to give Army
the 6-3 win. Sophomore Jay Clark made 32 stops in the victory.
In the second game the Black Knights skated to a 3-3 tie Sacred
Heart. Meyer, Hickey, and freshman Danny Colvin each
scored for Army, while Clark had a 42 save performance in net
to keep the game tied at 3-3. Meyer leads the Black Knights in
scoring with five goals and three assists for eight points this
season, while Omilusik is right behind him with three goals and
three assists for six points.

THE LAST TIME THEY MET: AIC lost twice to Army in the
opening round of the Atlantic Hockey Championship
Tournament, 4-0 in the first game and 5-2 in the second. In the
first game, Bryce Hollweg, Rob Ross, senior Will Ryan, and
junior Eric Sefchik each scored for the Black Knights, while
senior Josh Kassel made 24 saves to earn the shutout.
Sophomore Dan Ramirez stopped 27 shots in the loss. In the
second game the Yellow Jackets received goals from Mark Pavli
and Greg Genovese, while senior Tom Fenton made 29 stops
in the 2-5 loss. Ken Rowe scored twice, while Ammon, Meyer,
and Hollweg each scored once to give Army the victory. Kassel
had 28 saves to send the Black Knights into the second round of
the AHA championship tournament.

NEXT UP: AIC takes on Sacred Heart in a home and home
series starting on Friday at 7:05 p.m. at the Olympia Ice Center.
