RMU Downs Ice Hockey 6-3

Box Score

West Springfield, Mass. - Ryan Cruthers and Chris Kaufman each scored a pair of goals as the Colonials of Robert Morris University downed the American International College ice hockey team 6-3 Saturday afternoon in a non-conference match-up at the Olympia Ice Center in West Springfield. The win moves RMU to 9-7-2 on the season while the loss drops the Yellow Jackets to 4-13-2 overall.

Robert Morris started off right where they finished from Friday's game, scoring the contest's first goal under two minutes into the first period when Cruthers took a centering pass from Chris Margott and punched the puck past the right shoulder of AIC goalie Tom Fenton (Sarnia, Ont.).

Despite the one goal deficit the Jackets answered back just over 10 minutes into the initial stanza when Mike Field (Marquette, Mich) found the back of the net from a tough angle on the side of the goal. Brent Griffin (Leyden, Mass.) and Andy Gevorkyan (Glendale, Calif.) were both credited with an assist on the score.

Both teams ripped off 11 shots in the first period, a frame that saw AIC score twice; the second time off the stick of sophomore Chris Campanale (Chester Springs, Pa.). Campanale scored after taking a splendid feed from freshman defensemen Tomas Benovic (Trencin, Slovakia) right in front of the net

Mark Pavli (Sarnia, Ont.) scored a power-play goal at the 14:30 marker while Chris Kaufman scored twice for the Colonials in the second period, making the score 3-3 going into the final frame.

In the third period, Robert Morris used three goals to open up a 6-3 lead and eventually earn the victory. Sean Berkstresser, Tom Biondich and Cruthers all scored to propel the Colonials.

Fenton played well despite the loss, turning away 30 shots for AIC while his counterpart Christin Boucher stopped 25 shots in net for Robert Morris.

AIC will conclude their three game home stand when they host Holy Cross Tuesday evening at 7:05 pm.
