Army Edges Ice Hockey 4-3

Box Score

West Springfield, Mass. - Army scored three times in the second-period en-route to a 4-3 Atlantic Hockey Association victory over the American International College ice hockey squad Friday evening at the Olympia Ice Center. The win propels the Black Knights to 3-4-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the AHA. The loss drops the Jackets to 0-4-1 overall and 0-3-1 in the AHA.

The Jackets' got on the board first with less than two minutes to play in the first-frame. Sophomore Mike McMillan (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) took a pass off the boards from freshman Tom Mele (Bronx, N.Y.) swung around the net and made a nifty dish to senior Mike Field (Marquette, Mich.) who punched the puck in, from right in front of the net.

The Black Knights answered back three times in the second-period, twice on the power-play. Owen Meyer tied the score up 13 minutes into the period, crushing home a one-timer feed from teammate Luke Flicek on the power-play.

Ken Rowe scored the second goal of the stanza for Army after ripping home a wrap-around feed from Chris Colvin. The goal made the score 2-1 and was on the power-play.
Bryce Hollweg helped Meyer earn his second point of the game after taking a pass blue-line feed from Meyer and scoring from just outside of the crease. The goal was even strength.

In third-period, AIC made the contest interesting, scoring twice. Senior Jereme Tendler (Viceroy, Sask.) broke through the defense on a breakaway and beat Black Knight goalie Josh Kassel making the score 3-2. Frankie DeAngelis (Woodbridge, Ont.) fed Tendler the puck.

Kassel turned away 15 shots on the evening. Yellow Jacket goalie Dan Ramirez (Rochester, N.Y.) played well in net for AIC, stopping 23 shots.

Army answered right back at the 10:35 mark. Joey Ammon snuck through the Jacket defense and turned over a backhanded shot past Ramirez. Cody Omilusik and Eric Sefchik were both credited with an assists on the score.

Army led 4-2 with under a minute left when AIC pulled Ramirez and left the goal open, freeing up another skater. With 12 seconds on the clock Mike McMillan (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) tipped a Keith Rodger (Parshall, Colo.) slap-shot past Kassel for a goal, making the score 4-3.

Unfortunately, it was too-little, too-late, as the clock ran after the face-off.

The teams will conclude the home-in-home series tomorrow night at the Tate Rink in West Point, N.Y. Game time is scheduled for 7:05.
